    Lee Marvin in The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance. Even John Wayne had to hide up an alley and shoot him!

    Actually Lee Marvin in most of his roles was about as tough as they come.

    I think Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry takes some beating. This is one very tough cop who never backs down.
    As for the ladies, I'd say anything with Cynthia Rothrock in.

    For the women it's definetly Ripley for me.

    There are physically stronger female characters and there are better trained and skilled but there's no tougher character than Ripley.

    Not so sure about male,
    Jason Bourne?

    Nah, Liberty Valace was a typical bully. Easy to act the hard man when you've got all your heavily armed mates around you.

    Jimmy Stewart was tougher for having the guts to stand up to him even though the only likely outcome was to get shot.

    Lee Marvin was great though.
