Apologies for asking a perhaps obvious question. There is a (football) game I need to see next Saturday via streaming (hopefully). It would be great to able to link up my Acer laptop to the TV and watch it via the TV. My laptop is modern so has an HDMI socket (as does the TV). Would someone out there kindly advise as to what I need to buy to facilitate this. Thanks.

A HDMI cable long enough to reach from the laptop to the TV.
Hardware wise that's it. To get the sound on the TV you will most likely have to change the audio output device from the laptop speakers to digital output over the hdmi cable. You may have to change your desktop resolution. Using both displays mine works best at 1280 x 720. My graphics card peaks at 1600 x 900. Experiment before the big match ?
Not easily, if it's BBC iplayer then getiplayer allows downloading of iplayer content to hdd. Other than that some sort of screen video capture utility. A lot depends on what drm protection is on the content. If your laptop has analogue composite video outputs you could record to a DVDR.
I think it Depends on each brand as to the specific use of hdmi features. My Toshiba laptop + a relatives brand new win8 Sony laptop are both plug n play for graphics and sound to the tv.
Not so much the brand, more likely the OS, the settings used and the sound card and it's drivers. Hence the reason to say may.
