Since Freeview HD is DVB-T2, will current HD recievers be able to decode HEVC broadcasts since they're also under the T2 'banner'?

DVB T2 refers to the rf modulation ...... See https://www.dvb.org/standards/dvb-t2
Not the video codec AVC HEVC or whatever
So a Freeview HD box will not decode it.

You will note that the German profile has a transport if 28 Mbits/sec ..
Which is roughly what the uk profile gets from DVB T ,
the uk profile for Freeview HD using DVB T2 is around 44 Mbit/sec ..

As far as I can tell using Google translate on the ARD Das Erste website. HD is not carried at present via the terrestrial network only satellite and cable. There are presumably therefore no legacy reasons why they should not start their new service using a more advanced system. There are no implications that their decision would affect us in the foreseeable future.

DTT is not widely used. In Germany,
The west as very very cabled ..... Which is why it was very slow to embrace DVB c ,
While the east needed rapid coverage at reunification hence DSAT which covers the whole country .....
The means that sky Deutschland has a problem because all other DSAT is FTA .

There was a proposal to make the whole of the UHF broadcast band open tor mobile/broadband as it is underused.
But with he requirements that gave been applied to DVB T are applied to DVB t2 there us a reasonable bit rate per 8 MHz channel..... I.e what uk has in a t mux,

Whether this is used for HD or UHD or lots of SD is a commercial decision.....

Ah, thanks for that Anthony. That was something else I was wondering about, and didn't know.

Purely hypothetically, because it isn't practical to replace or upgrade all the terrestrial HD receivers, what would the consequences be to terrestrial broadcasting here if HEVC DVB-T2 were implemented in the UK?

Current German DTT is mostly 4 SD channels per multiplex in Single Frequency Networks.

The plan is to relaunch DTT with a mix of free (PSB) and pay (commercial) TV using DVB-T2 and HEVC in Single Frequency Networks (takes a bit of the possible bandwidth though). It will for example, allow ARD to transmit all of its digital TV offshoot stations on terrestrial for the first time.

There will be a transitional period later this decade. Once the transition is complete, the 700 MHz band is handed over to the mobile network operators, leaving the DVB-T2 HEVC service using the remaining UHF frequencies.

A move to HEVC has been considered in the UK, but this would render current DVB-T2 Freeview HD devices redundant, as well as all the original Freeview non-HD equipment.

The transition to DVB-T2/HEVC is being accelerated, the german website Teltarif.de reported that the federal network agency BNetzA (BNA) wants to speed up the release of the 700MHz band making it available by early 2017, more than 2 years earlier than originally planned. Broadcasters, manufacturers and consumers will be required to upgrade in a shorter time-frame.

The network operator, Media Broadcast, wants to commence the first regular DVB-T2/HEVC transmissions in metropolitan areas by mid-2016.

As well as the ARD and ZDF sites some of you may find DVB-T-PORTAL.de interesting, google translate seems to work on it fortunately if you search it via Google.

Im am following the German HEVC roll out as well from German sites and forums. As for the plans to speed up the transition it remains unclear wether this is feasible. It´s also the question if no boarder problems will occur since other countries may have another time scheme for clearing the 700 MHz band. The main question for me is the availability of good priced T2- HEVC receivers at the start in 2016. All big manufacturers are present within this field trial in Berlin to get things right in time. On the other hand: Viewers may switch to satellite because the commercial broadcasters RTL and Sat1 switch to pay TV in HD. Their satellite broadcasts in SD must remain FTA until 2023 because of a court ruling as punishment for illegal actions to force viewers into pay TV.

I assume that current FTA satellite equipment will coast less then a brand new T2/ HEVC settop box.
