    How is everyone doing?

I smoked for over 20 years and gave up 18 months ago. I chose not to have patches, I didn't want anymore nicotine going into my system, so I had a fake cigarette for about a month, which really helped. I won't say it was easy but it's the best thing I have ever done. I am £200 a month better off and feel so much better.

Don't worry if you keep falling off the wagon, just don't stop trying to give up.

I have to say I wasn't really aware of stoptober but I am currently on my fourth cigarette free day. I smoke around ten a day, more on weekends and a lot more when I drink so we will see how I go. So far it's not been so bad but every other time I've tried it's been hell. I've not even used my nicotine replacement thing I got from the doctors yet, good luck to all other quitters out there :)

I have just failed miserably on day 12 :( Actually i hadn't exactly given up if i am being honest,i was smoking 30 a day prior to this and decided to cut down first.

First week was hell but bearable hell, got down to 5 a day, after that first week i actually felt worse,i have awful anxiety problems and was coping with everything else, the tears, bad moods, cravings etc but was desperate for the increased anxiety to improve.

Today i had 3 episodes of major panic, never had it so bad, called my doctor's surgery to ask about nicotine replacement and was told that i had sent my body into panic mode by doing too much too soon.

Anyway they are willing to help and can provide up to 3 quit smoking aids for up to 12 months,i am really upset about the panic and the failure so my doc said to wait a few days until i settle down before i try again because if try again too soon i am more likely to fail again.

Well done to everyone sticking to it,for me it has been much harder to even cut down than i imagined it would be and although i know what happened to me is normal i couldn't take it and definitely need some help to quit,i will definitely seek that help and give it another go,do feel very upset with myself though.

    and I have
become allergic to the nicotine patches.:(

The area on my arms went red, then swollen, then started leaking pus(sorry). Got very itchy, so scratched my arms when I slept, and now the area is bleeding!!

    It all started so well!

Sorry to hear that stargazer, patches are not for everyone,i did make an attempt with them myself about 8 years ago but reacted badly and kept having severe migraines so i had to stop them and i didn't try anything else.

There does seem to be more choices now with the nicotine replacements, maybe an inhaler or gum might suite you better,my doc said patches would be her first choice for me but if i get those migraines back it will have to be something else.

The only plus side to migraines is that they wipe my vision out so i wouldn't be able to find my ciggies to smoke them :D

Sorry i know it's not funny but right now if i don't jest about it i will carry on beating myself into a pit of misery.

It's not all over,we can try again, try different things and beat this smoking lark!

Please don't be so hard on yourself Bella, I suffer from anxiety attacks, I know how difficult they are to live with, so the fact that you are trying to give up smoking a go, is amazing, really proud of you. :)

Be kind to yourself, you haven't failed, just never give up trying to give up smoking, you will get there. Just don't rush things. :)

Have you tried Champnix, the tablets you get from the doctors? My sister and brother in law tried absolutely everything and these were the only thing that worked. And they were both heavy smokers, it's been 2 years since they last had a ciggie.

Thankyou so much for your kind words heavenly,i am still doing my best to keep back from smoking as much as i can without giving myself anymore anxiety,i will most definitely be trying another quit or more serious cut down again when i am feeling stronger, just need to find a better approach next time.

Sorry to hear about your anxiety too,it really is a horrid thing to live with and makes things like this a lot harder but of course not impossible :)

I did talk to my doctor about Champnix the other day. He gave me some papers about it to read. It did sound very interesting but I tend to have very adverse reactions to a lot of drugs so am still unsure as to whether to try it or not.:(

Just wanted to say good luck and well done to those who are taking part.

I gave up three years ago in order to run the london marathon - had taken me years to give up properly prior to that.

Go for it - you really can do it!

Maybe your doctor could give you something to help you through the panic attacks, just until you get off the ciggies? Short term use of a tranquilliser won't get you hooked and could be helpful to see you through the worst. I know what anxiety attacks can be like as I used sometimes to wake up with one in the morning (it eventually turned out they were due to low blood sugar, caused by not eating enough in the evenings). My doctor gave me some low dose Valium to take only if needed, and just knowing they were there was enough to make me feel calmer.

Good luck to everyone trying to get off - stick at it if you can. My brother-in-law has COPD now, after many years of heavy smoking - I wouldn't wish that illness on anyone. :(
