I heard an interesting discussion on the radio today about patients taking control of their health, their medical records and their own care and treatment.
I had never heard of this NHS site

https://www.patientsknowbest.com

Has anyone used it ? I was really interested , and thought it had many advantages.

Certainely some patients with long term illness will know far more than a random House Officer/ Junior Doctor that sees them in a clinic
My own daughter ended up briefing the doctir who saw her in a clinic and had to correct him on her prescription he wrote

I can guarantee that if the doctors who said there's nothing wrong with me wouldn't be saying 'Just keeping taking these pain keillers (that DON'T work) if it was them who kept on haing the same pains as me and can'r sleep because of them.
Just DON'T get them treated in Manchester, the doctor's DON'T want to know and they'll just keep fobbing you off with pain killers.
I know there's something wrong with me, THEIR negligence if I end up overdosing and have to be stomach pumped, but they wouldn't have it.

It was really interesting that more and more people are managing their own healthcare. I was genuinely surprised at this development. I didn't know it existed.
    Fascinating site. :)

    About time.
I have little or no faith in doctors after all the botched diagnoses my acquaintances have suffered, eg one was diagnosed with a mouth ulcer repeatedly for months even though it was expanding and changing shape. What was it? Oral cancer.

Even I know that mouth ulcers are not meant to last that long.

In my own dealings with doctors I have had to suggest blood tests, prompt them to consider something, based on my own research.
They all seem to be chronically uncurious and disinterested and just want to dole out meds (which they get bribed... sorry 'financially incentivized' to prescribe).

I also hate the condescending 'private club' mentality they have, patronising you and explaining stuff as if to an infant.
And many of us still swallow it and feel guilty as if we've been impolite by disturbing the Doctor when he's doing such important work.

If i had my way we'd do away with GPs completely and adopt the German system whereby pharmacists deal with minor ailments (colds, hay fever) and specialists do everything else.
I.e if you have a rash you go straight to a dermatologist. If you have urinary problems you go straight to a urologist etc.

Thanks benjamini. I haven't read it yet - is it likely to make me cross?
    This topic just angers me.

The concept here is excellent, allowing for transparency, interchange of knowledge and records etc.
It looks like an innovative way forward.... not that I think doctors will play ball.
The very name 'Patients Know Best' will rile their sensitivities and they will dismiss it as a busybody website intended to hinder them.

It seems to be less about empowering patients but a system for allowing remote consultations with clinicians. I can see how that is useful for some situations but not really useful for a patient. Its a culture change you are after rather than this, an online appointment with a doctor. And i would say a more accurate title would be 'patients have insight', rather than 'patients know best'.
