Well I did live through the Beatles and I agree they were innovative BUT I honestly believe it could have been any group who played and wrote their own music. I loved the Beatles but they were in the right place at the right time just as 1D are today.
that is a very important point.... they were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, the role for 'most influencial group' was up for grabs, pop music as we know it was moving from the solo artist to the group format. (yes there were groups before the beatles, but mainly it was solo males, after the beatles it was groups that dominated).
so like other acts at the time, they had the talent but were lucky enough to get the break/exposure.
The Beatles were every bit as much a boyband as One Direction back in the day. They were preened, dressed and marketed to appeal to young girls. The fact that they played instruments is neither here nor there. There are millions of musicians out there, but not that many who can write great songs.
The Beatles had musical geniuses in Paul McCartney and John Lennon, but that didn't shine through right from the outset.
Maybe One Direction have members with as yet undiscovered musical genius and, one day, they could be bigger than The Beatles ever were?
Or maybe they'll be playing at Butlins in a couple of years time.
its true that they were preened and marketed initially at a young female audience (but that was nothing new, all big acts since the 50's had a large, young, female following).
but they soon transcended that... and thats something one direction havnt and probably will not do.
it is totally relevant that they played their own instruments and composed their own music.... thats what sets them apart from boybands. you say lennon mccartney were musical geniuses...true...what boyband has had anyone as big as them?.. (barlow comes a very distant third).

While I agree that the Beatles marketed themselves at young girls, they were clever and talent about it right from the offset. They actually wrote most of the clever songs songs that made every young girl think they were singing to them and there concerts were nothing short of outstanding with the way they connected to that audience.
I don't think the Beatles have ever had just 1 greatest hits album released that sums up every great song they ever wrote, they usually follow in multiples of 2 or even 3 and even then, there are still song which were top of the chart which are missing from these compilations. That is unpresidented and pretty outstanding.
Forgetting for a minute that we are 'comparing' this band to 1D here, baring in mind that the Beatles success back then is STILL the measurement for any new bands around nowadays, 50 years later, that just shows how big this band are/were.
Like it or not, there will never be another band like the Beatles and this is just basic fact based on the way music is purchased, social media, and also people's humongous choice in music these days.

No, no, no.
Epstein changed the image to get greater appeal, but no one anticipated the reaction that followed. The Beatles were already an exceptional live act, and unfortunately the screaming meant that they were never able to put on the type of show they could because of the noise, once they became famous.
They were also writing the music, and deciding what they wanted to do, rather than be puppets of very rich people.
The screaming girls are the image of those years, but they actually appealed to a much bigger audience than that, which is why they were able to change so drastically over such a short time, and continue to attract so may fans.
I cant see 1D coming up with their equivalent of Sgt Pepper in the next year or two.
Yes it is, and also one of the most addictive songs they ever released. But it's not the best example of their musical genius, what was implied in the previous post. They have enough of their own songs to proove it
How old are you, 5 or 6? This thread is insane. Everybody who even dares to compare One Erection to the Beatles is mental. I'm scared of persons like because people like you are personally responsible for the poor quality of today' music.

and who remembers them 40 years later despite all the screaming girls they attracted?
Are you serious?
Classics like I saw her standing there, Please Please me and Twist and shout were on their first album.
Twist and Shout is a cover.

When they were recording Please Please Me, Twist and Shout (which was recorded at the 11th hour) got mistaken for La Bamba

Yes, it is a cover, but it is also a classic.
