Quid Pro Quo?

When you do a favour for a friend, is it reasonable to anticipate help if you need a favour from them, or not?

On the one hand, we don't intentionally do favours for friends thinking 'you owe me', but would we be justified in feeling miffed if we approached that person with a similar problem a few weeks later and got a rude response in return?

Should we do favours expecting nothing at all back, or can this lead to being taken advantage of?

I'm genuinely curious as to people's responses.

If you do something to receive something back in return, then you probably haven't done it for the 'right' reasons.

If I were to ask any of my friends for a personal favour or help with anything , as long as it wasn't too illegal they would put themselves out and make every effort to do it - and me likewise for them.
