He was barely a year older than me and I think this is why it strikes home so hard. It makes you aware of your own mortality. And as people have said - he was a genuine comic one-off who influenced so many after him .... and by all accounts it seems he was a genuinely nice man.

I'm finding myself singing (to myself) Billy Joel's 'Only The Good Die Young' a lot lately too!

Didnt Queen do a version of that (or maybe it was a different song?) I thought it was about Freddie. :)

I think people felt like they knew him somehow . I met him only very briefly but I felt exactly like that . It's very sad when you think we've lost 3 comedy greats this year prematurely (Rik Roger Loyd pack and James avery )

What's it got to do with sensitivity? Surely this is a discussion forum and people are free to post that they didn't like someone. After all, it isn't as if people who actually knew the guy personally will be reading this, is it?

As for the title of this thread. I have endeavored to find out if his death has hit anyone I know hard, and it doesn't seem to have, and I know a lot of people. Since he died I have not come across a single person who has even mentioned it. This is not to say, I hasten to add, that some people aren't talking about it, but just to say that people I know aren't. I mean, not only has it not hit them hard, they actually couldn't care less.

This thread is asking why Rik Mayall's death has bit people so hard. Since you don't know, you actually have nothing to contribute.

It has hit people hard, ie his fans, because it was premature, and out of the blue. I can't say he was ever a favorite of mine, his comedy always seemed very juvenile, and I certainly don't think he was a 'genius' but yes it is sad.

People always say weird things when a celeb dies prematurely. I actually think 'Bottom' was strictly schoolboy humor, but to hear some people talk now, you would think it was the most groundbreaking comedy ever.

Rik & Ade basically did the same humour every time but it was still funny as hell. Dont think I ever laughed as much as when I saw Bottom Live for the first time.

It was one VHS release I was dying to see.

Its a personal fav of mine as me best mate used to pop over to watch bottom.

At work we spent most of Tuesday throwing quotes around and bursting out laughing at our memories of his work - I don't think there is a finer epitaph for a comedian. We're all of a similar age - 40s into 50s - so we grew up with alternative comedy. I have shed a tear, never have for a celebrity before and I plan to wear my most smashing blouse on the day of his funeral. ;-)

I love it! It reminds me of what my family ,friends and I did the day he died,I'm in the same age group as you so myself and family and friends spent the night group texting his quotes from Bottom -my daughters also joined in! Great fun :D

"My what a smashing blouse you'll have on Rik will be proud " ;-)

We went to see Bottom live too -with blow up doll Monica and the jar of industrial size glue wasn't it?
I know Ritchie thought it was hand cream and sweated more on stage than Lee Evans does! ...ah good memories :D

I didn't say I didn't like him personally. I just said I thought people were free to voice their opinions on people, as I often read really awful posts criticizing people on here.

I just wanted to say that I can't find anyone that it has hit hard. So the answer to why has it hit people so hard is it hasn't., which, you may not like, but is a contribution to the conversation, as it is, I finally got to talk with someone old enough to have seen all his stuff and he said he was dreadful and not at all funny and totally overrated. That's not my opinion, by the way, so don't complain. I like the error above by the way.

Personally I always think it's sad when someone dies before their time, no matter who they are.

What is really funny is that Mayall has not been relevent for the past 10-15 years at least:D

There's that word "relevant", a buzzword designed, as far as I can, to sell gullible people crap they don't need.

Rik transcended relevance. People enjoyed his shows long after they finished airing. That is testament to great work.

Any of the top, new "relevant" comedians could drop dead tomorrow and the reaction from the public wouldn't be anywhere near as heartfelt as it was for Rik.

    Right on!

I mean, absolutely agree. Been watching loads of him on YouTube this weekend. Obviously there's a tinge of melancholia, but bottom (heh) line....have been laughing a lot. Special man.

What does that expression even mean? Who is relevant? Jack Whitehall? Relevant to what?Yes, Rik had a quad bike accident 16 years ago which left him with a head injury. Sadly, that meant he could not do as much as he did before. I was watching him in Man Down the other night and he was excellent in it. He was restrained even though his character was meant to be eccentric. It wasnt a big role but he was the best thing in it, and I wonder how the show will survive without him.

only asking because i still feel very sad about it :(

I'm not too sure it has hit a great deal of people very hard. It will most certainly hit his wife and children hard, but as for 'the public', perhaps it's all part and parcel of those who cried and were distraught when Princess Di died. (I wasn't, by the way).

I was working that Sunday just up the road from Kensington Palace and was amazed at all the folk pouring out of Ken High St. Tube station toting bunches of flowers etc and heading down the road. My explanation is that we all watch too many soaps and can no longer distinguish between sentiment and emotion.

Given the way this 'caring' society treats its old folk (shuffling them off to manky homes where they are no problem any more) and a huge number of this 'caring' society is addicted to child porn, all the sentiment and sadness about Rik Mayall and Princess Di remind me of the comment by Oscar Wilde, who had an unerring ear for bullshit, that 'sentimentality is a bank holiday from cynicism'.

    Too true.

Whilst I get your point, am not a royalist, and obviously any mother dying young is terrible, but the world did seem to go OTT at the time...but from my own personal experience it's not really sentiment, just "Damn, he was great and made me laugh a lot."

A number of my friends of a similar, erm, 'vintage' have felt the same this last week. Think it might be my generations equivalent of Eric Morecombe dying (relatively) young. Don't remember that too well, but know a lot of people were gutted at losing a man who had given them so much pleasure.

Obviously if he didn't really resonate with you, it's different. I am often a right cynical b'stard, but comedy is one of the ways I have my own personal holidays from that cynicism. Loved Rik Mayall's comedy.

(sorry, bit self indulgent there possibly..) And mucked up my reply to your post somehow.

I posted this in the other Rik thread, but basically as well as being extremely talented, he was also a great guy. Also, his wife and kids lost him suddenly and very young so that hits home with everyone. A week later and I'm still in shock over losing him..

I went to see 2001 An Arse Oddity, front row seats and Rik was drenched in sweat, kept forgetting his lines but it was hilarious!
