Decking, Rats, JEEPERS!

Lovely afternoon, sunny and pleasant ...

THEN noticed a definate (LARGE) rodent entrance underneath the decking

Shut the dog in, put some bread out and (after an age) saw the evidence for myself - a RAT :eek::eek:

Knowing that I have provided a warm, safe, breeding ground for these creatures is a problem ... I am not happy killing anything.

BUT, what do I do???

    Ring the council.

Most offer a free service to get rid of rats if they're outside.

you better hope they don't make a nest and lay eggs.

one clutch of rat eggs will produce a king and a queen, along with 20-40 soldier rats.

10 rats can chew their way through brick and cavity wall insulation in under 2 days, and if they lay their eggs in the cavity walls you are in trouble.

    Be very careful

the problem with this is they then take them away and release them elsewhere (in fields usually) as they are humane.

    my suggestions would be:

    1) a .22 rifle.

    2) buy a metal rat trap, thick gloves and a large bucket. catch rats one at time in the trap, pick up trap (wearing gloves so rat doesnt bite or scratch you), drop trap in aforementioned large bucket which is now filled with water.

    3) get a generator, put a pipe over the end of the exhaust and push pipe under the decking or into any holes you find and plug the rest to gas them.

Sorry but im a country boy and my humane treatment of animals doesnt extend to rats.

My Greyhound's a good ratter, wanna borrow him? I'm with the poster above, humane and pest rats don't belong in the same sentence. Please don't use poison though.

agreed - poison is a pain and not worth the hassle - especially if you or your neighbours have cats or dogs...

Lol, exactly the same thing happened to my parents today. Mum saw a rat running from under the decking, dad's put a trap out to kill it tonight :( I feel sorry for it, even though I don't like them.

one afterthought - if you trap a rat get a cover to throw over the cage before picking it up - they tend to spit and pee all over you otherwise.

I agree. It harbours rats, it has to be maintained, it has to be re-painted or stained, and you get your stilletto heels stuck in it.
