Wife's just been given a Toshiba laptop with wifi, my pc is hardwired for broadband, she wants to use her laptop away from all our existing connections, so what kit do I need for a wifi setup.
Virginmedia fitted a cable modem when we had the free upgrade to 10Mb.

Best bet is to then plug your computer into the router and not the modem.
Plenty of suitable routers available on Amazon, dabs etc. Search for 'wireless router'. One labelled wireless-n will be faster than than wireless-g.
Just don't buy an ADSL router - that's different and for when you get broadband down your phone line.
If in doubt, see what catches your eye and post it here.

New 10MB customers get a modem and router and new 30MB+ customer will get a superhub which are both in one..

I have a real liking for Netgear products as I have found them to be reasonable value for money and pretty reliable. I have had one of these for several years now with no problems at all.
