I haven't read them in some time either but I was under the impression that after the death of Dudley Watkins they just recycled all the old stories all the time and if that's still the case then they won't have changed at all. I remember Oor Wullie was able to go into a shop with 5p and buy a comic and a bag of sweets and still have change left over which never made sense to me as a kid until I realised that all the stories were 20 years out of date.
I had an oor wullie book when i was a kid, though now its gone I fondly recall the drawing style; ...its was so unusual being that I am from California....but trying to sound out the words he was saying was a fun way to imagine I was there.
I've been getting the Broons and Oor Wullie books every Christmas for decades, and yes things have changed a little, but they're still good.
It's fairly inoffensive fun from a bygone era, that never really existed. They do occasionally try to be more up to date, and it gets pretty jarring when they're suddenly playing video games or something
The Broons is very much the same. Although political correctness has crept into some aspects of it. But on the whole it's the same.
Our Wullie has changed quite a bit, I think. In the past, I don't recall Wullie being friends with girls as much as he is today! The stories always were weaker than the Broons because the Broons has more characters and there's more scope for variation.
I have some of my dad's old Broons and Wullie annuals!
i used to love how basically all the broons strips were basically 1 of 3 stories:
1: the twins mishear something grandpa says and report back home. The family gets in a tissy and marches down the street. When they get there they realise it was all a misunderstanding and start laughing.
2. Maw broon decides the house needs some work done to it. Pa broon decides its too expensive and therefore says he will do it at a fraction of cost. When complete it looks great, then they notice the shortcuts paw took and he goes in a mood as they have to call in the decorators anyway.
3. One of the characters loses something. They check all over the house for it. Its not in the drawers or under the sofa or even in the fridge. In the end the bairn has een using whatever it was they were looking for for some sort of game and it was basically right in front of them the whole time!

Reminds me of the spoof comic strip that the Viz did called The McBroons

Unless they admitted it was a reprint, they should've updated the price.
Sunday Post readers got a taste of a different style of comic strip yesterday, with a free Dandy. I wonder what the Broons/Wullie fans thought of that?

i remember in the early 80s the artwork changing a bit.it was never the same.they just couldnt capture the way watkins did it.
I remember them changing Fat Boab, from wearing a flat cap to a baseball cap.I expect he's commiting drive by shootings now to keep him relavent...Don't ask what they've got Soapy doing but his nickname means something else now!

No. Fat Boab's still as he always has been. No gang violence or drive by shootings  or anything like that these days.
Does anyone else wish that the Broons and Oor Wullie annuals were twice, or three times as thick? By the time you've got to the end of the annual, it just seems like there's not enough pages in the annuals.
If you read the little rhyme at the top of the page, it gives the whole plot away! Always irked me if my eyes wandered to it while i was turning the page..

I wish i had some annuals sitting around right now. I'm bored.
They probably have changed quite a bit.
