Norwich Union and Direct LIne don't use the comparison sites. Can't say how cheap they are though.

Can I ask why you hate them? I think they are a very good way of getting cheap insurance and it saves having to input your details on the site of every insurer.

If your priority is cheap then these are your best bet. Unless you find a high street broker who can quote for you.

I work in the insurance industry and I always use the comparison sites.

Direct Line and Churchill used to be quite cheap. I was with Direct Line last year and the year before, and they were always the cheapest.

However this year, they charged me an absolute fortune so instead i used the comparison site and found one much cheaper! I'm with Elephant at the moment. Not a clue how good they are, but they provided me with everything i needed at a low price! Did have to pay it all in one go instead of monthly, but the extra amount they lump on top of monthly payments is ridiculous!

i cant find any company that will give me full comp insurance under about £198 p year. This would be for a tiny car like a Suzuki Alto 1.0. Its like the price falls in line with the car, until you reach £200 and then the price stays the same even if you get a quote for an even smaller car.

I would die happy if somebody gave me a quote of £200 per year for my car insurance!

I was given £900 as a quote this year, and that was the cheapest! Sometimes i hate being a younger driver

I remember some years ago, older family members saying their insurance for the year was down to about £120, and this was for cars like the Ford Escort - so not the smallest car by any means.

I would be happy with £200 a month. The lowest quote I've ever had was £3500. Hence I don't have a car.

I insure my car with LV (Liverpool Victoria) who I've always considered a good and price competetive company.

If you are a young driver you might possibly do better by approaching a specialist Insurance Broker like Adrian Flux.

My young niece, who started driving when she was 18, has always insured with Tesco. She informs me that they have always given the best quote for her.

Direct Line are, phew, very expensive!

I have found that insurace groups for cars make no difference in the price we really pay but older cars regardless of engine size are much cheaper than a newer car with a small engine. My insurance for a 2.4 litre car is about 320.00 pounds fully comp plus business use which is not really that expensive, I think the quotes can vary a lot depending on your post code.

Postcode gives a £2000 difference in my case (from my postcode in F band to a friends who is in the A band).

I'm 'downsizing' from a 1.8 petrol sports hatch to a 1.3 diesel (brand new) and there is no difference in the premium.

I've put the details through loads of comparison sites as well as the insurance company I'm already with.

I have found that if the value of the car is under 1500 pounds then the quotes are always low with my company. I only drive volvo estate cars which have a strangely high group (usually 16/17 ) so I think the company would just write the car off even if the damage is small and only have to pay out a small amount of money for the entire car.

I'm coming down from a group 18 to group 5 and honestly expected the premiums to be less. I'm on an 08 plate at the moment.

It's not a huge issue as I'll save on fuel and excise duty (none in first year and then £30 - much better than £180!)

That is a very low excise to pay, I worked in Eire full time a few years back and decided to tax and mot my car there, 1340 euros for a years road tax, I drove the car back to the North and taxed it for 200 pounds. The Euro was pretty much the same value of Sterling at the time.

The rates have changed since and do favour the smaller car, engine size is taken into account but the emmisions are more important and dictate the cost, check the link for the bigger engines/higher polluting cars, its frightening .http://www.irishlinks.co.uk/car-tax-ireland.htm

Every year I've had to shop around because even with no accidents etc and another years no claims bonus the renewal premium goes up to a ridiculous amount. I haven't been with the same insurance company for the last 7 or 8 years. I expect it to go up a bit because that's the way it is but sometimes they take the biscuit.

I was with Endsleigh this year for £163 TPFT on a 5 yr old car. I can't get anywhere under £200 this time and it's really annoying me. I read they were putting prices up some as much as double but bloody hell we need help to be able to get by with the dam recession not price hikes the b*****ds!

I know it sounds like I'm quibbling but I get sick of them saying you're paying for everyone else who're shit drivers and can't help attaching themselves to other cars or trees but I don't believe that for a minute. They hike the prices up because they're just bloody greedy.

Anything between 200-300 pounds is good for car insurance nowadays so I would go for anything between those 2 fiqures. I also ride bikes and insure a range of motorcycles but the fiqures never really show any real sense, for example I insure a 1100 cc bike under classic insurance (kawasaki zzr1100) for 90 pounds but my 100cc scooter costs 115 pounds as its not old enough to be a classic but is worthless compared to the bigger bike, the bigger bike can reach very high speeds but the scooter tops out at 50mph, which one is the bigger risk in all aspects of insurance.

Has the OP attempted to put other people on the policy, I'm on my friends and it brought his insurance down by £400 because I have 2 years no claims

This is twice today I have quoted you. I am not following you, honest.:)

I actually do drive the car you mention above and was very surprised with my quote (£330 a year fully comp, 4 years no claims) This is a group 1 insurance!!

I went from a group 15 to a group 1 and the premium only dropped £190.

I asked my insurers and they said (I quote) " I have no idea why they're so high sir"

If they don't know then neither do I. Price comparison sites were even higher.

Something around £200 sounds pretty cheap, compared to what most pay, although cars and risks vary obv.

Have you tried getting comprehensive quotes as they are often cheaper then TPFT, oddly enough. Apparently TPFT drivers have more accidents!

Done a deal with Endsleigh. First time I've stayed with the same insurance company 2nd year running. Got it for £198 which isn't much off and they were umming and ahrrring but I'm not gonna get any better. Thank you all for your input it was very much appreciated and I've learned some of you are paying extortionate prices so I should be grateful and I am :)
