Downloading Youtube videos - my ongoing battle

I asked here before about good Youtube DL software. Although I never found one my antivirus was happy with, I discovered I had some kind of an IE pluggin that popped up a downloader I could use directly above the Youtube video screen - the exact one that appears at the top of this link, the "Download this video" icon:

I seem to have managed to uninstall this little gem, though God knows how - it no longer appears on the screen. Anyone know what it is, where it went and how I can get it back?

    I think you need this - http://uk.realdownloader.com/realdownloader/

I don't know if it's only since YouTube last update a few days ago, but you have to hover over the video for the download button to appear now.

Oh Gawd, was it something as retarded as having to have the video playing? It kept appearing then vanishing, but it vanished when the video auto-paused. Click "play" and it's back.

I spent a good 45 minutes pointlessly looking for something else and generally panicking.

    Thanks to both of you.

I've used the above chrome plugin which adds a button to the youtube page. Easy to use and gives you an option of which format\quality you want to download it in.

I recently discovered that if you add "kiss" ahead of "youtube" in the URL of a video it takes you to a downloader for that video.

    http://keepvid.com/

Paste the address of the video into the box and press the download button on the right (don't touch any of the adverts with a barge pole).

Google seem to be blocking youtube download addons this last week or so, no problem with firefox but recently installed the Torch browser which has a really good download manager built in so just open up Torch if I need something off youtube.

Do it the old school way; use Wireshark to sniff the traffic and extract the required URL.

realplayer downloader stopped working with chrome because Chrome added their own flashplayer, and realplayer couldn't get at it. The work around was to go to the plugins on chrome - I think you typed plugin and disabling chrome's flashplayer - leaving the adobe flashplayer option below itt enabled. That allowed adobe to be used and the realplayer started working again. Not sure where that is now with the latest chrome/realplayer variants - but as mine works I am not updating them in case it doesn't.

The other thing coming with youtube is the spread of the HTML5 (??? is that right???) youtube that doesn't use adobe and means the realplayer download button never appears. They seem keen on making downloading more and more difficult (to make you review the adverts or make you adopt whatever downloader they eventually offer?)
