Really enjoyed this. It's always good to see Charlie back on our screens and taking a swipe at crap and absurdity (pink rifles for 5 year olds! Sorry Doug Stanhope, but I don't care how nice the US reallly is. I'm not going anywhere near it while they think it's a good idea for pre-school kids to carry lethal weapons).
I agree that the panel discussion about Django was a bit pointless.
I did like the show, but given CB's main focus is TV, why have
a section on a feature film?
Hmm.. I'm a massive fan of Brooker but I wasn't totally keen on that format, especially the "discussion" part.
Still, better than most of the crap on television. Roll on next week.
Agree totally. Massive fan, loved all the shows before. But the discussion bit close to the end did seem rather pointless in my view, and effectively stopped the flow of the programme entirely. I began to think I was watching Film '13 after a few moments. Other than that, it was up to the usual brilliantly high standard, and the Oprah mash up regards Lance Armstrong was hilarious, making it out as if she'd been making out with him.
The child and the pink guns thing was sobering, proving that even Charlie Brooker doesn't have to embellish some things in this real crazy world of ours because they speak for themselves.
As much well deserved fun he took out of ITV's Splash, which almost comes over as so bad it's good (but not quite!) I was pleased that he didn't duck out on BBC issues, and went head on into the Savile Tweenie issue, including showing the very contentious clip.
I know I should probably have found what the American guy, Stanhope said about Hitler and Britain highly offensive, but I just could not help but smile at it, even as I was doing so I was wondering whether I ought to be!
So Charlie, forget the 4 minute "derailment" discussion near the end, and everything will be great.
Oh, and why the change from Screen Wipe to Weekly Wipe? The former was more true to the programme and a better title.
Most entertainment formats are international, if they're doing well in one country for the right price a broadcaster would be silly not to pick it up.
In terms of creating new formats, ITV probably creates or is the first commission more formats that do well in both the UK and internationally than any other broadcaster.
Stuff that has done well internationally originally airing on ITV includes
Pop Idol,
The X Factor,
The Chase,
The Cube,
Downton Abbey,
TV Burp,
Those are the big recent big shows I can think of.
There was a thread on something similar to this the other week. It's quite interesting to see which shows were remakes from US to UK and vise versa.
'Hitler did his best to help the UK and level that country flat so they could start over, like extreme country makeover, and what did the Brits do? Spat in Hitler's face and built it back, brick by brick, exactly the way it was 1100 years ago.'
Anyone know if that standup was part of a regular gig or was it just for the show?
Yes, I thought it was a bit pointless (ahem). Maybe if there was a week in which they were struggling to find topical material the discussion would fill up more of the show.
But it great to see Charlie Brooker back doing what he does best. I still think the programme should be called Omni-wipe!
I agree. Don't think he needed the 'celebrity guests'. Could be a red button/online segment.
I normally hate the Doug Stanhope segments, but last nights was very funny.
I agree funny ripping the pee out of us Brits.
Mind you, 6 year olds with pink rifles scare the shite of me. Most of Americans support the right to bear arms don't live on east/west coast where most of the anti-gun lobby reside.
Is he still peddling the "wipe"| format? No doubt he still does the same old act as he did years back. I will go to find it on iPlayer just to see
He can't really win can he? When he does a wipe series, people complain that he's a one trick pony, but when he does new things such as the zombie movie, people complain that they wanted another wipe series.
Always a fan of anything Brooker does, although didn't care too much for Black Mirror, found Touch Of Cloth far more appealing, and glad to see the wipe format back. I always find Charlie at his best when he's visibly agitated about something and giving it both barrells verbally. Shitpeas and Cunk are ridiculous but that's why they are on I guess - a pisstake at the 'talking heads' you see on other shows with their pointless thoughts on banal subject matter. Stanhope I am not a fan of - the only time he's made me laugh is when he did an English accent on 2012wipe when dismantling the Grand National race. The Osman/Calman/Brooker scene was slightly pointless, but overall its 30 mins on tv a week I can actually look forward to watching.

Variety is the spice of life. Black Mirror was excellent
Got bored of it...lacked a special aliment and too much time was dedicated to the dead end "joke" characters of Barry Shitpeas and that bloody Doug Stanhope...the film review bit wasn't needed and took vital time away from other stuff
Something I did notice, for the second Wipe running he had a go at Obama for the drone strikes in Pakistan, I get the feeling that the influence of his wife and her family is coming through here, because Obama is usually a saint to our left-wing entertainment community.

I don't think Obama is seen as a saint. He's usually seen as the lesser of two evils when compared to the Republicans.
Nobody in TV or the media in this country criticises Obama though, and the BBC has a particularly sycophantic attitude towards him.
Most left-wingers are disappointed by Obama, but as the Tea Party has lurched the Republicans to the right, no-one much feels like criticising him.
I enjoyed Stanhope too, but really wondered if some Brits aren't getting the irony of his bit last night, which is kind of ironic considering the yanks aren't meant to get it. Generally his sthick is how miserable his life is. So the entire piece seemed more a piss-take of USA than Uk. After all he probably doesn't like Hitler.....

That is a very good point that passed my mind too at the time, as you rarely hear criticism of Obama over here in the UK and I did think "Oh, unusual" as he said it. His Blue Peter bride didn't enter my head until you mentioned it however, but she has always seemed highly opinionated herself, so it is a valid question.
I take it there is no 3rd series of Channel 4's 10 O'Clock Live early this year then, with Brooker?
It's a fair point. Actually, his worldwide news is becoming far too Americacentric; with their issues getting much more coverage, loads of news clips and then the Doug Stanhope segment. I noticed this on the yearly roundup, where the American election got a timely piece with the French and Egyptian elections grateful to get a passing mention. It's a shame as both elections offered up plenty of hyperventilating news footage that he could've used.

Yeah, like how what looked like a favourable contrast to UK customer service turned out to be a dig at the fraudulent greetings and smiles for a tip in the US
currently reading Dawn of the Dumb at the moment. Had a LOL moment on the bus when I read the line 'Kinga (from Big Brother) thinks Alcopops is the noise you get when you pull the bottle out'.

He's not wrong, I'd be thinking about emigrating, if it wasn't for the fear of getting shot, by everyone.

Because it's supposed to be weekly review of all aspects of popular culture.

Very good.

Welcome back Wipe

Oh I agree. It's just I've seen a few comments online were people have criticised him for both things.

Far, far, too much information.:D
Indeed, the lovely Diane Morgan she is. Kept reminding me of Sara Cox, but I've just found out they are both Boltonites of course.
