Finally relented and got rid of W8 start up UI

I have had Windows 8 on two computers since the release date. I have tried and tried to get on with the U.I. but over the weekend have finally relented and installed Classic Shell. I am simply wondering how many people feel like myself and have gone down the same route?
I don't think W8 is a bad OS, it clearly isn't. However, I just can't see any good reason for MS to foist this poor UI on the consumer. I have two friends who both have a W8 touchscreen AIO and neither of them use it as a touchscreen They both complain that using the AIO as a touchscreen feels awkward and uncomfortable and the finger marks on the screen drive them to distraction.
I think we all know why MS have gone down this route, i.e. the tablet market, but I really think they need to re-think their strategy. OEM's are certainly non too impressed with W8.
What do others think - is it time for a re-think?
P.S. as regards Classic Shell - great to have my PC back, though I have found on the HP Laptop the W8 UI often appears for a few seconds on start up before Classic Shell takes over?

They could also try a multi-touch trackpad with their AIO. I don't have Classic shell installed but I rarely see the Start screen anyway as my most commonly used applications are all on the taskbar.
This - if they didn't do it now then they may have missed the boat with it. I expect as newer versions of Windows come out it will get more refined than it is now but MS knew they needed to get involved with Tablets/Phones and quickly before Android had everything to themselves. I think it will be a long road but MS have started along it now.
4 million and 1 now! I just can't see what the start up UI brings to the party? I must say that I never found corners to be very reliable too, very hit and miss for me.
I can see the logic for tablets and WP8 but it translates poorly to the Desktop.
I've got to admit I've never really had an issue with it, although don't tend to use it either! I think the worst thing MS did was take out the Start button - if they had left that in there would be very little complaints from people I think. I expect that they did no think it would be quite as much a problem for a lot of people as it has turned out to be.
I don't miss the Start button and menu. I use Nexus for that. Just like I did with XP.
My brother doesn't even notice I've installed Windows 8 on my PC. :D
I tried the UI for a week and that was enough.

The author of StartIsBack has said that it won't work with the forthcoming Windows 8.1 because Microsoft have removed the necessary internal code which StartIsBack uses. However, some of the other utilities have been tested with leaked pre-release versions of Windows 8.1 and are ok.
Microsoft have said they will restore the Start button in Windows 8.1 but this will only invoke the Metro tiles screen, not the conventional Start menu. Of course, it's possible that decision might change before Windows 8.1 is released.
I can use both absolutely fine and the change for my home use doesn't bother me one iota.
I think some people are just being too pedantic / fussy over W8.
A large multi-touch trackpad is a must to use Metro mode smoothly IMHO.
Very true, and if you look its the same moaners all the time.
I haven't used W8 yet, but I'm glad to see there's a Classic Shell, so I would use that. I hate the W8 look. On my Vista and W7 PCs at home, the first thing I did was change the Start Menu to the Classic one. I hate the newer look.
At my work, we're still using WinXP! The PCs are 2002 Pentium 4 models, as well.
As for W8, I can't see that tile format being standard for the workplace. You should've heard the outrage after they changed last year from Outlook 2002 to Outlook 2010 (which everyone hates) as it's moved elements all over the place and is just appalling. Why do they do that?!
Yeah, i noticed that, still it just means I will stay with 8 and not update to 8.1, unless Startisback is updated, anyway from what I have seen about windows 8.1 most of the updates are to do with the new UI, since i don't use the UI, no need to update, also, no one knows if the update will be free or not.
i doubt it will change, MS wants us all to use a ring fenced system, where we can only get software from them, where we have to use a Ms account so they can track what we are doing with these Apps.
No think you
So please tell us what it brings to the Desktop? It doesn't even work properly as the corners are totally hit and miss. I have one W8 running Parallels as a VM and the other on a W8 Lappy with corners hit and miss on both machines. As for tiles and apps, certainly not for me thank you. You are right though it is the same moaners - Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Dell etc. etc.
