The BBC did the same last year, at the recordings they say it's over two nights, normally Christmas Eve and New Years Eve, then months after the shows are recorded, the BBC move the golaposts and make it one episode, and thus looks a bit disjointed, I saw both these episodes recorded at the end of last year, along with S10 and 11 that were all done at the same time, and this year it did prove that Ben does have a heart after all !
For Rolf Harris to appear in this My Family Christmas special represented a blast from the past as he had the Christmas number 1 in 1969. In fact, you could say I found this episode so funny that my reaction was "I haven't had this much fun since Two Little Boys was number 1"!:D:D
5.6 million pretty good, beaten by the soaps of course, as someone else has already said had the Beeb not shown QI and MF the wrong way around figures would have been even higher.
Lets hope they can keep the figures high for the 'longer' run of S11 in the summer:)
I was away for Christmas weekend, and I've only just had a chance to catch up with it on the i-player. The advantage is that I was able to move the timer forwards to the bits with gorgeous Gabriel Thomson in it, and ignore the rest.

i did not like this episode so much but the series is not dying because this years series was good

It certainly felt like it. The second half seemed more for a New Year showing.
Neither half was as bad as that future bit from last years, thankfully. The second half was better, I thought.
