I suspect some time - they have said they are going to roll it out across the country but it is likely to take some time as they are spending large amounts of money to deliver the service and it isn't yet even close to being profitable.

So the answer is it depends on how well the roll out goes in London and how much the investors want to invest into the service next year.

If they maintain prices that reflect the actual cost of doing business then they will be ok.

I hope they keep everything reasonable for the business and don't sadle themselves with mountains of debt - ala cable company.

Given that this thread or HomeChoice area of the forums is sponsored by the said company.. is it wise to have Digital Spy Staff comment so itimately about the success or viability of future commercial prospects of the company and it's products? Could this give rise to a conflict of interest?? No disrespect to DS at all!

    :)

Maybe not but I agree with what he says.

If it works in London then they are far more likely to consider a national roll out.

We always will reamin independent :)

When Home Choice started it is a matter of record that they charged their users between £10-£30 a month but were being charged £50 a month by BT for the network.

With the fall in costs of ADSL charges from BT - and the change in charging and service from Homechoice that has radically changed - hence the new roll out across London and the new exchanges they are installing in at the moment (as someone reported elsewhere they announced 3 or 4 new exchanes quite recently - and their first one outside of the M25). http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=152633

Homechoice's investors know that they have to invest money to roll out a service to the UK and they have to do so in a relatively short time span to keep ahead of any potential competition out there.

Overall the latest Homechoice offering definately has a place in the market - as can also been seen from comments on the forum.

Agreed. Today's HomeChoice (since about May) is, for all intents and purposes, an entirely different product and an entirely different company than the one that was on the precipice of the abyss last year with 2500 loss-making subscribers. They've been given one final shot at success and, so far, they seem to be making a pretty decent go of it. (With a few notable exceptions, like the absolutely insane policy - only just changed in the last week - of requiring an engineer visit to change the simplest STB settings, like widescreen mode. How much money did that piece of idiocy burn? But even this, they got right after a few months.)

Or, in fact, click on the link at the top of the page which says 'Find out more about broadband services from HomeChoice!' http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/homechoice

What is to say that another company might try a similar product in a different city.

There have been persistent rumours that NTL and BT would launch a VOD service over ADSL for some considerable time. But so far that is all they have been.

ntl is currently testing it's own VOD service with the On Demand group, and should be roller out before Xmas/early next year, so lets hope!

And if all you need to do to be on HC is BT line, why is rolling the service out such a problem?

The problem is that, as a customer, yes all you need is a BT line. However, as a company, Homechoice need to install all their equipment in each telephone exchange to hook it up to their system before they can roll out in that area.

Hypothetically, the coverage of homechoice could match that for ADSL - but it'll cost Homechoice millions of pounds to install all they need in each telephone exchange to do that. Mind you, 4 years ago, everyone was saying that BT would never install ADSL into every telephone exchange cos it'll cost too much....

At the moment, the only other company which is making noises about this is Wanadoo (formerly known at Freeserve)

Their 'Live' box (at the moment, just used for wireless homenetworking connected to Wanadoo Broadband) is capable of delivering a whole bunch of tricks to Wanadoo customers if they want to sign up - VoIP (i.e. Internet Phone) and VOD being 2 of them.

Wanadoo certainly have a big company behind them (France Telecom) and they're certainly spending money at the moment like it's going out of fashion (they've just announced their building their own completely new broadband network in Holland) but it'll be interesting to see how much they can do before the banks catch up with them....

You forget some other small companies, like our friends in Redmond: http://www.microsoft.com/tv/default.mspx. Intel is also hot on the subject.

Actually, if you do a little Google(iptv -iowa), you will find quite a lot of people are dead serious about IPTV. They all smell the dosh, one way or the other.

Also Kingston Interactive (http://www.kitv.co.uk) have a service in Hull.
According to their promotional video it seems to do some stuff HomeChoice doesn't (yet), but mostly it doesn't seem as advanced.
