I like the rollseyes smiley as it is an instant indication of someone who is a bit of a nob. You know you are safe to then disregard their every word. Saves time.
For me - and I suspect many of us - a simple smiling smiley = sarcasm. Most of them have layers of meaning, maybe not what some of the users intend.
