I know but Darke has his fans on here (as well as a close friend) but for me he did make a few glaring errors last season - none more so than the Ozil goal v Bayern - which I could see how that would irritate people up high ( particularly on a game that was BTs biggest at that point of the high profile CL contract).

As a huge boxing fan I'd love Ian to go back to Sky, especially now they've given Halling the axe.

Are we expecting any change in the Sky commentary structure this season with Hawthorne, Tyler and Parry as the main commentators or will we finally see Leslie and/or Mann overtake Parry in the pecking order?

    Long overdue in my opinion

I highly doubt that they will give Fletcher ALL the big games. He probably meant that he will get a majority but it is very unfair on Darke.

I think people are reading a bit too much into this, to be honest. As far as Fletcher is concerned, every game on BT is a big game. He's not going to say "No, I'm doing some rubbish ones as well". I'm sure he means that BT have loads of big games, not him personally.
Liverpool v Milan- Tony Jones and Ray Houghton

I recorded this and Leicester vs PSG, but then did my usual pre-season thing of looking at the kits and the line-ups and then not watching a minute of the match. Sounded like Gary Weaver and Terry Gibson on Leicester, though they weren't introduced.

I think as much as Darke love's his boxing and probably misses covering big fights, the chances of him going to Sky whilst still at BT is probably zero!

if that is the case that Fletcher is getting all the big Games it will be intresting to see what happens regarding Darke as his old job as the voice of Boxing for Sky is available

I'm meeting up with Ian and others this week and will post an update ....if he wants me to!

Good to see John Roder's very busy, he has contacted me about another project he has in mind, too, so he's clearly not winding down at all!

Have agreed a date now, by the way, with Brighton's main theatre for a big nostalgia/mirth/memories night the football club want me to help put on with them next March (30th), and will expect to see as many of you there as possible! ;-);-)

Should be great fun and I'm hoping to get some commentators there too!

Think you'll find Daniel still on the Football League, but rest assured he's highly thought of!

That suggests Bill Leslie is on the up?

Hopefully firmly in fourth place in the pecking order, and given the lesser games. I'd also like to see Parry and Hawthorne get some of the biggest games and not have Tyler do all the biggest games.

Does it?? for me it just sounds like previous seasons with Tyler, Hawthorne and Parry with Leslie getting some games along with the League games.

Looking at it Leslie will only really get PL matches once Parry retires. Maybe if Parry does less games this season Leslie will pick up a few more but that it his only way in at the moment.

Why when Alan Parry retires? He's several years younger than Martin Tyler!

Jon Champion being pretty outspoken about Arsenal fans

I think he's talking nonsense but it's interesting he's being that opinionated on US TV, don't think it would be encouraged from a mainstream football commentator on UK TV. I recall when he had to apologise for calling Luis Suarez a cheat on ESPN UK, because the comment had upset some Liverpool supporting subscribers.

    France U19 v Spain U19 (UEFA Women's Under 19 Championship Final)

Wayne Boyce and Jen O'Neill for British Eurosport 2 (HD)

A rain delay of about 80 minutes between the first half ending and the second half eventually beginning meant that both Wayne and Jen both had to wait until commentary could re-start. Whilst 'Eurosport HQ' cobbled together some WATTS bits and a re-run of the San Sebstian Cycling race held yesterday as an 'inbetweener' we had them essentially talk for a good 15 minutes over pitctures of the groundstaff with shovels, mops, wooden brooms or whatever they could get their hands on!

I've just caught the Alfie's Boys documentary that BBC Two made about England's 1966 World Cup win. I'd actually recorded it the first time it aired around the beginning of Euro 2016, but hadn't got round to watching it until it was repeated this evening (a day after the anniversary of the final). It was a really enjoyable watch with lots of good archive footage - from the familiar to clips I hadn't seen before. It was nice to see them calling upon almost all of the squad or people representing those who have died or aren't in the best of health these days. For those of you who aren't totally sick of "66 and all that" nostalgia by now, this is well worth catching, and even those who are sick of the hype might make an exception for a programme that looks at the team as individuals and being a product of that particular point in time rather than purely in terms of the sporting achievement.

Anyway, to keep things relevant to this thread, I have a query about the TV coverage clips shown from 66. We saw shots of a BBC TV panel anchored by David Coleman discussing a few incidents, notably Nobby Stiles' foul in the build-up to the first goal in the England v France group game. One of the three pundits was the unmistakable Jimmy Hill, another was introduced as Billy and I think may have been Billy Wright, the other I didn't recognise. So to those whose memories go back 50 years and/or are archivists, am I right about Wright and who was the other panellist? Interesting to see some punditry wrapped around what I assume was highlights or a magazine show, as notoriously the first World Cup panels during live games are widely credited as having come on ITV's coverage of Mexico 70.

Charles Sale says Gary Neville IS returning to Sky as a pundit this season (after speculation he may not be following his tweet about a Q and A).

GN's gadgets won't feel the same as his words came to nothing in real life situations in world cup 2014 and euro 2016

Could be wrong, but I have a vague recollection that Ron Greenwood was actually used as a co-commentator on the final itself alongside Kenneth W?
Don't think he said much, though!

Billy Wright later become head of sport for Central TV in the Midlands, one of the nicest guys in TV I've ever met, and I remember having a meeting with him and executive Trevor East at a pub in London somewhere to discuss my possible move to Central from BBC Radio.

I disagree- they all add to his experience and insight of the game.

He's had many high points as a professional footballer, and I don't see how a few disappointments in management reduces his insight.

Interesting to see some punditry wrapped around what I assume was highlights or a magazine show, as notoriously the first World Cup panels during live games are widely credited as having come on ITV's coverage of Mexico 70.

There were panels during the World Cup before - and the Beeb themselves had an enormous panel in the 1970 World Cup, there's a picture of them in one of the Saint and Greavsie books in a Blankety Blank-style two-tier set-up* - but the difference with the 1970 ITV panel is that it was the first time they used the same people for every match, so they became really famous. And as Brian Moore pointed out, they also tried to get some controversial people as opposed to the rather bland punditry previously.

Anyway, the BBC pundits paraded in the Radio Times for the 1966 World Cup are Walter Winterbottom, Billy Wright, Joe Mercer, Don Revie, Ron Greenwood, Arthur Ellis, Tommy Docherty, Ken Aston, Johnny Haynes, Jimmy Hill and Danny Blanchflower.

    * Ian St John was one of the Beeb's panellists in 1970, and in that book he talks about being part of the panel with Brian Clough and Bob Wilson on the day England were knocked out. Frank Bough asked Bob Wilson what he thought Alf Ramsey should do next and after the show finished, Clough complained bittery to Bough that he'd asked Wilson such an important question when Wilson was only a goalkeeper and he was a manager.

Don't think he said much, though!

As the fantastic ITV Regional Highlights website confirms, Walley Barnes was the Beeb's co-commentator, though maybe they crossed over to the studio for Greenwood and others to contribute. And ITV's co-commentator alongside Hugh Johns was the Wales manager Dave Bowen.

Ian Holloway was on SSNHQ this morning, talking about the football league coverage.

Surprised he isn't back as a manager at some level, maybe he prefers touring the country being a pundit.

Interesting case in the latest Ofcom bulletin...
BT Sport Europe is a sports channel owned and operated by British Telecommunications Plc (“BT” or “the Licensee”). Wembley Gold was a programme featuring highlights from past football matches played at Wembley Stadium. This particular episode included archive footage from the 1981 F.A. Cup Final (and its replay) between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, and featured the original commentary by Brian Moore and Jack Charlton.

A complainant alerted Ofcom to one of the commentators referring to a player as “coloured”, which they found offensive.

The word in question featured in the following description of a passage of play by Jack Charlton:

“Paul Power did terrific; he sold two lovely dummies there. But when the ball came in to the little coloured boy there he turned on it the wrong way I felt…”

For me GN wil not have the same impact as he did before, no one will take him seriously he is a failed manager, he has got no credibility at all, pontificating about other teams faults, and how they should improve.

I can imagine the likes of Mouhrino, Wenger, Cunte, will be shouting at their screens " You know nothing about football"!!!
