Never a favourite of mine with his political views but a real character and always a favourite of the likes of Mike Yarwood. With Bob Crow's death as well, not a good week for lefties. R.I.P.

What a shame - he was a man of integrity and his passing marks the end of an era. I was lucky enough to hear him speak on a couple of occasions and he was a great orator. Probably the last politician you could actually trust.

Integrity, decency, trustworthiness, and he could politely and effortlessly get his point across. I'm sorry for our loss.

At times one of the few men who talked sense at a time of absolute madness.

A truly great man, the original conviction politician, a man of high principle and a giant compared to the shallow money grabbing pygmies that infest Westminster today.

    RIP sir.

He seemed a genuine person who gave up his peerage to become an MP. He must have been ill for some time as he hadn't seem to have been on TV or radio for a while. RIP.

And? He was pretty much a national institution and most here, sensibly, don't bother with the politics section. But thanks for being so pedantic and adding helpfully to the discussion.

I'm not even going to try and better that comment. Well said.

We have to give thanks that never happened.
Though I shared some of his views he would have been a disaster

Add to that, a great Parliamentarian, a superb orator, and a gentleman.

    R.I.P :(

Agreed. Somebody as hard left as he was would have been dreadful, although, like you I did agree with him on occasion. No wonder the young people liked him though, he never grew out of that naïve idealism.

A political giant who had the courage of his convictions, stood up for what he believed in and spoke his mind without fear or favour.

There will never be another one like him, sadly.

Just read a lovely story - on the Mail's web site of all places - about Tony Benn. He met his future wife over tea at Worcester College, Oxford, and proposed to her on a bench nine days later. Years later, he bought the bench from the church that owned it and installed it in the garden of his London home. What a romantic - and a politician of great integrity.

    RIP
