is it just me or does anyone think the 6th generation of gaming was more enjoyable then this one?
remember acting buying a game for the playstation 2 not because you wanted to beat your friends online or the graphics just because it was a good game and you could enjoy it alone
or having the gameboy advance on the go small and portable without the need for a touch screen or 2 screens:p
gaming these days seems so focused on graphics and online play i thinks its losing the whole value of actually enjoying and playing the game
anyone agree?

8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit and currently 64 bit.
I play games that I enjoy playing regardless of the graphics. I would still play Out of the Shadows on the Spectrum 48K over anything these days.
The digital side to it allows for a lot more experimental stuff such as Journey, Braid, Limbo, as well as old classics being replayable such as Daytona, Virtua Fighter 2, Streets of Rage Collection, etc.
Sure certain big games are becoming over saturated, but hell, this generation we actually have MORE choice on what to play, to some that can be overwhelming, I know I have a massive backlog of both PSN and XBLA titles to get through.
It's a shame that dev costs have sky rocketed in recent years and publisher interference seems to have gone up too, leading to a risk averse industry. The thing is, costs are going to keep going up, marketing costs will go up further too and eventually we'll end up with a select few publishers and devs.
A launch model PS3 lets you play your old PS1/2 games and you can download many classics any way
The 360 lets you play and download original xbox games
The Wii has the virtual store for downloading classics
So you can still enjoy all these games for fun and you get all the new features introduced this generation so, i have to disagree with the OP this generation has been much better for gaming
Gaming has made wonderful advancements in the last few years but we seem to take a lot of them for granted. I've seen kids (12/13) in this day in age get furious that XBox live has gone down and cannot play COD or FIFA online.
Albeit, this could just be down to the behaviour and upbringing of the children, but on the other hand, things like this wouldn't bother me. I'd go and play an adventure game that would fill up their time.
I do get the OP's point and I feel that back when I had my PS2, N64, PS1 etc, I couldn't have cared less about online play and just bought a game for games sake. Yes of course the graphics and gameplay advancements have been truly amazing, but I do feel a lot of new generation gamers are going to forget what it once to play a game that didn't rely on your broadband connection and just play a game, how it should be.
But I do stand by the fact that we have MORE choice these days, only certain mainstream and very popular publishers go for big graphics and cinematics, and sadly, yes, they are popular and over saturated, but there's loads of underlining games that often go ignored, for example, a recent one, Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, that came out the other week, it's a brilliant kart racing game that's a lot of fun and was made by a UK Studio, barely made a showing in the charts sadly.
Gamers often have this locked tunnel vision style, where they don't see outside of Graphics, Call of Duty, EA, etc, and a lot of people here suffer from the same thing, declaring that there's no fun games around anymore or that there's nothing experimental and pushing out some crazy ideas, there are, they just go ignored!
I agree as an old sckool gamer, I hate all these gadgets 3D and all that nonsense, I prefer an awesome game with just a Joypad and the Wii Remote is the limit for me that I can bare.
I do love the progress of amazing graphics as long as the game is better in it's self.
I look at the Wii U and just think meh jesus I can't be assed with that, I hope the PS4 and even Xbox stick with a simple joypad of some kind, I know why I play my mulit platform games on PC.
I think the one thing that has taken a lot of enjoyment out of gaming this generation is the games industry seems to have gone a lot more commercial. I remember when online gaming was about having fun, trying out mods and new maps, finding or creating skins ect, now it seems to be about subscription, DLC, map packs, premium packages which has stifled creativeness in the industry. These days it seems to be about launching the next huge franchise and aiming for massive day one sales rather than letting a game develop a fanbase over time (If something doesn't sell a million units in the first ten minutes its a flop) but this is hard if you want to pump out a sequel every 12months.
And so the additional characters or skins ect can be sold as DLC rather than rewards for achieving something in a game.
If there was one thing about this gen I'm not a fan of then it's the technical problems that some games have faced, tearing is a regular and accepted thing nowadays as are dips in frame rate, last gen developers tended to have much higher standards when it came to visual consistency so this is something that's taken a bit of a nosedive this gen for sure.
