Like the thread about directing, i thought I would do a thread about shows which had cast members as producers or executive producera

Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano were producers for Charmed in it's final four seasons. Rose Mcgowan was offered but turned it down.

Jennifer Love Hewitt was an executive producer on Ghost Whisperer

Kiefer Sutherland was an executive producer on Touch

Eliza Dushku was an executive producer on Dollhouse.

    Isn't it frequently the case that actors are offered exec producer credits instead of huge pay increases during contract negotiations? (i.e. they get exec producer credit and a 'normal' pay increase! :) ).

    I think it was an interview with Gary Sinise I read many moons ago in relation to CSI NY.

    Possibly, but it can me more than just a credit

    By being an Exec Pro, it allows you much more creative freedom. You work heavily with the writers and creators of the show, and your very much in charge of the character you play on storylines and developments. I don't know if every actor who becomes an Exec Pro actually does this and just takes a credit and does none of what i said but some actually do. Eliza Dushku was heavily involved in Dollhouse. If anything, she was basically a co-creator as she was responible for the creation of the show as much as Joss Whedon was, something he has credited her for many times.

    I know that Richard Dean Anderson wouldn't have signed on to Stargate SG1 without being an Exec Pro because this time around he wanted more creative freedom on his character, something he couldn't do previously on McGyver.

    James Roday and Dulé Hill are both producers on Psych.

    Roday has also written or co-written 16 episodes and directed 6 episodes (usually ones he has written)

    I am guessing it is so prevalent in the US as it is a way to pay the stars bigger money which in some way allows for tax breaks so it costs less to the TV makers - as opposed to just upping their salary as actors?
