been having issues with my pc lately and thinking my motherboard is on its way out.
sometimes fails to boot hangs at bios startup screen
it I go into the bios says no hard drive detected. I have 3.
restart it a few times and they seem to be detected again
when I do have the pc on I loose the drives and get a window popping up when redetected showing folders.
if C drive goes walkies pc freezes and I get windows 8 says needs restarting
I have achi enabled with having a ssd has main boot drive.
checked sata cables and all are firmly connected
what do you guys think

you could try disconnecting the power to the other drives and dvd roms etc and see if it works better as wont need to be providing as much power and may remain usable until you can get a new psu
As above, strip out any part that isn't essential and see how the machine performs.
My spec is
Q9650 socket 775 CPU
ATI 5770 GPU
1 Blu Ray drive and a DVD Writer
M3 SSD
500 and a 640 GB drives
PSU is a high end 560w
I do have some old rubbish psu spare think they are only about 450w
Would that power my PC to see if it cures it or are they underpowered
It may be faulty rather than not having the grunt to run everything. In which case using the old PSU would show that. If you plumb in the old PSU and everything is stable then chances are it was the old PSU failing in some way.
If however the old PSU also can't run everything then it might be the load on the PSU rather than the PSU itself causing the problem.
Could even be a known problem with the BIOS/UEFI requiring an update, but no point updating if Google finds no references to that being likely for your motherboard model.
You can usually get a good idea if the PSU is struggling by checking the voltages in the BIOS/UEFI 'health' page. Any even slightly lower than they should be, while there's hardly any load, would be a good indication, but I doubt if a "high end" one would be the source of the trouble. Which (PSU) manufacturer?
Always a good idea to pull and reseat the memory - if it's easily accessible. Or just run memtest86 for a few hours.
ETA: Just found this Open Hardware Monitor which looks pretty useful...
Motherboard is a Asus P5E3 Deluxe and bios is the latest one available
PSU is a Tacens Valeo Smart 560 link below is PSU

Will check the bios for the voltages later
