Unusual and ancient UHF aerial.
I noticed this on the side of a house in the Preston area of Lancashire a few days ago. It's a long time since last I last saw an "H" type aerial for channel 2 from Holme Moss.

If the small "loop and grid" mounted off to the side wasn't for BBC2 then what was it? I have never seen one of those before. It doesn't look very substantial but must have been to survive for as long as it has.
The "H" aerial must be 50 years old. The aerials are aimed towards Winter Hill.

Looking at that website

it looks like the "H" aerial also had a bolt on for ITV.
Here's an item from a local newspaper

"With an eye on public taste, the special announcement claimed: “Remember, most programmes will always be in black and white because of the cost and because colour would add nothing to them from the point of view of entertainment value.”.......
"The retailers suggested a colour set, “still many years away”, could not possibly be put on the market at less than £250".
I bought a 32" LCD set in January for £240 with a 5 year guarantee. £250 in 1961 would be £4712 today http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/education/Pages/inflation/calculator/flash/default.aspx
I can never remember seeing a band III antenna in Preston - the city has been pretty well covered for years (BBC 1 from Winter Hill VHF in '62, BBC 2 from Winter Hill UHF in '65, and BBC 1 / Granada from Winter Hill UHF in '69) - I wonder if this meant a lot of older sets used indoor aerials and therefore less need for an outdoor one? The same UHF Yagi's were on pretty much every house in older parts of town so I wonder if the local installer preferred that one brand?
