A Maya Angelou quote for you.
I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way (s)he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
I'm guessing, judging by so many of your posts on here, you'd handle all of them badly.
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings remains my favourite book ever. I've read it four times since the 80's.
She lived a remarkable life and was genually sad when I heard the news this afternoon.
She did. I have all her books and read them again from time to time and always will.
Such presence, a determination and strength to rise above some horrific experiences and against the odds.
A fascinating life, she just oozed wisdom and charisma.
A sad day indeed.

I have that particular user on my ignore list. Having seen you quote her message, I can see I made the right decision.

Unfortunately your post is spot on Bela,
My view on Maya -truly inspirational may she rest in peace ,<3
I'm glad that this thread is here after the one in GD was derailed and locked.
She was a true inspiration, and it's remarkable what she achieved given her early life. It's a sad loss for the world, despite it being somewhat expected..
Yesterday I was with my son, there was a quiz show on in the background and he got the link of poets from an emerging list of names including Angelou. I sat there oblivious, he shortly afterwards announced that Maya Angelou had died, he found it ironic whilst I sat there thinking 'Who?'
My point is that some younger people do know who she was and what she stood for whilst some of us older ones did not! I feel quite ashamed by that but watched and listened and found out about this wonderful lady.
Maya Angelou was an inspiration to millions around the world.
I have read all her books & I love her poetry. I understand there are many people who didn't know who she was & I don't think that shows ignorance or unworldliness (we never read Dr Angelou in English Lit either, it was Shakespeare, Shakespeare & even more Shakespeare for us, my interest in her came via finding 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings' at a car boot sale.)
My hope is that people who had never heard of her before will now discover the works by this Phenomenal Woman.
For me I love hearing her read her poetry, her voice is so soothing, a female version of Morgan Freeman.
The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Same here. Remarkable woman. Would be a shame if this thread gets locked for any reason. Of all the thread types that end up 'locked' on DS, I was surprised to see one about Maya Angelou getting locked!

Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God.
She lived a remarkable life and was genually sad when I heard the news this afternoon.
RIP.

R.I.P dear Maya
Maya has taught me the power of a woman. A guide, a hero. A light.
I really shouldn't be surprised that you wrote this Wilcox! It's so in keeping with your other musings.
..................................................................................................................................................................
A literary colossus. Her legacy will live on forever. An inspirational woman.
RIP Maya.
had to do a google search *shrugs*

Always makes me tear up.
It brought tears to my eyes.

Same here. She's awful, isn't she (that Wilcox creature, not Ms Angelou ;-).
This was one "Phenomenal Woman" who inspired countless people.
Rest well Maya.
