Just a littl thread for those listening to more obscure artists of any genre to post youtube links and or discuss them. Always enjoy bonding and talking over the discovery of some forgotten artists and songs. :)

I listen to a LOT of music, my favourite three "types" overall being 60's rock (who, beatles, small faces, zombies etc) be it r&b or psychedelic pop, post-punk (the sound, magazine, comsat angels) and country (johnny cash, townes van zandt, merle haggard).

At the moment, I am particularly immersed in a lot of 80's jangle pop/alt rock artists. A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled onto a band called The Brilliant Corners. Pretty basic 80's pop rock sound really, and certainly not consistently amazing albums, but loads of little great songs. A highlight for me being:

Barbara Morgenstern. This German electronic musician has been making records for 16 years, pretty engaging and charming ones as well.

    "Come to Berlin"

"Das Wort / Schiffland / Die Liebe"

There's an interview with Morgenstern here:

I'm a big fan of The Haunted a little 60s pysch band from Montreal

They were quite popular in Canada but sadly overlooked elsewhere

Their track 1-2-5 is one of my favourite tracks of all time

Amongst other great songs they did the recorded a great cover of Purple Haze called Vapeur Mauve (Pardon quand j'embrasse le ciel)

Oh blimey, the sound of my youth, I really liked the brilliant corners around my late teens, I probably have a couple of albums by them still. Used to love delilah sands and teenage, and not forgetting why do you have to go out with him when you could go out with me. I was with them right up to the end but then during that awful period they put out a dance remix and well, that was the end.
I think it may have them who triggered my love of bristol associated bands, Sarah Records mainly, Scotlands The Orchids, The Field Mice etc.
These days they are all as far from my cup of tea as you can get but a lovely start to the day to see someone appreciating the brilliant corners.

My formative years were in the 80′s and it's my favourite decade for music. I listened to a lot of electronic stuff, but also liked various other genres.

This band had a few hits, but don't remember them as being that well known.
Aztec Camera - Walk out to Winter (live)
Had this recording on VHS and played it over and over.

This band were fairly well known, so you may have heard of this.
Fine Young Cannibals ‎– Johnny Come Home

Think this was a bit of a one-hit wonder.
    J. Geils Band - Centerfold
Great track and an excellent video (very hot for the 80's)

Gave that song a wee listen on youtube - kl 60's rock sound - good easy sound - very catchy track - kinda remind me of a slightly more conventional 13th floor elevators song.

I have most of their full albums but stillt listen to loads of their singles - my fave tracks are Growing up Absurd, Like father like son and Your feet they never touch the ground. Such a basic sound, but great little pop band. Also have listened to the orchids - good strong guitar sound but I found em a bit hit and miss with their vocal melodies.

Aztec Camera were a great 80s pop band - their first album is in my opinion a jangle pop classic, but they fell pretty hard in quality after that, unfortunately. Will check the fine young cannibals out :)

Eberhard Schoener, mostly his late 70s stuff. music to drift away to another place in your headphones.

    Love some of his lyrics

    I'd like a garbage can,
    Galvanised or plastic?
    whats the difference
    about 28 decibels

:D ( of course Sting was singing the words.)

See this is why I started this thread - listened to whats so strange there and its deffo my kind of thing - jerky, slightly nasally 80s pop-rock vocals, good strong guitar sound. they seem very obscure as well, can barely find any info on em at all!

I am currently listening to one of the best House albums of all time, namely Luomo's 2001 debut album Vocalcity.

A hefty 77 minutes, this albums manages to take the short clips and sounds of Microhouse, breath some depth and warmth into them, and then fashion and arrange them to create a pulsating, deeply immersive and welcoming album.

Really not my kind of genre in general, but your description has piqued my interest, you make it sound rather epic - so may give them a wee look :)

I read a review somewhere that it's a album that can be safely recommended to almost anyone and they'll enjoy it.

And it actually featured prominently in the 'Best Albums of the 2000s' of notable publications like Resident Advisor and Pitchfork.

Though I don't want to hype it up too much :p:D

    Momus.

Ah, poor Momus, a musical chameleon. He tried his hand at pop, rock, folk, electronica, released album after album stuffed with lyrical wit almost worthy of Morrissey and never got so much as a sniff of success...mainly because he was just never very good at any of it.

    Still, it's worth checking out:

Hairstyle of the Devil ("Sympathy for the Devil" as sung by the Pet Shop Boys and comes off sounding oddly like "Freaks"-era Pulp)

What Will Death Be Like? (Leonard Cohen meets Belle and Sebastian)

I first saw The Comsat Angels support U2 around 1981 and they became my favourite band, for whatever reason they didn't have the commercial success contemporary acts like the Bunnymen, Teardrops etc. did.

They did a joint headlining tour with the Sound which I never saw. It wasn't until a reunion gig in Sheffield 5 or 6 years ago that I saw them again.

I saw them supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1981 and thought they were pretty good - never really followed their career though.

The comsat angels are real faves of mine . Their first two albums were classics - but for some reason, after that the quality dovetailed considerably - its not that they changed their style and became more commercial it;s just that I fet aside from the occasional jem, the songwriting from those first 2 albums just wasn't there. Their first album is a particular classic in my eyes - whilst the second was brilliant, it descended into more joy division esque sounds, but their first album sounds so refreshing and unique - it has a borderline frosty, pos-punk production and the vocals have that detached laid back quality to them, but the songs themselves are insanely melodic, bordering on the alternative rock. To this day it sounds refreshing and vital every time I listen to it.

    I've been warned! :D

Anyway, if you hover your mouse over where I first mentioned Vocalcity in my initial comment, you'll see I left a Youtube link for the full album, coz I'm helpful like that ;-) :p

Don't forget the brilliant 'Eye of the Lens' EP between the first 2 albums.

I view them in 3 eras, after 'Sleep No More' the music did get more commercial IMO, record companies chasing hits I would imagine. I still like that period though, never understood why 'Will You Stay Tonight' wasn't a hit.

The 3rd era was the last 2 albums 'My Mind's Eye' and 'The Glamour'. To me these albums were every bit as good as the first 2. Lost classics I would say.

I've download, though haven't listened to this yet but it's a rather obscure ambient-techno album by the name of Pop (released 2000), by a German artist called Gas.

I have an obsession with dance/experimental/electronic/plunder-phonics music released in the years 2000 and 2001. Those years specifically. I do not know why exactly, maybe it stems from the fact that Daft Punk's Discovery (2001) is my favourite album. :p

    Might be a turn-of-the-millenium thing :D
