Playout software

Does anyone know what the best playout software to use is and what stations use what?

I have been trained to use Myriad but there arrogant salesman quoted my £60 per month to use it to "protect the reputation of his software"

I don't need anything fancy just something to play about with.

Google my friend, have a hunt around and see what you find :)

I've used a few and get on ok with Myriad.

£60 a month is a GREAT deal for Myriad!!
Were you expecting them to sell you a copy for a couple of quid?

I understand how companies have to respect their products value. After all it has taken them years of blood, sweat and a few tears to get it right.Maybe it would be worth looking for a buy out on something semi-pro?

Also some packages have a basic price for the play out software and then additions for scheduling etc. DARP NG wraps it all up in one suite that everyone gets to avoid confusion.

I use a pretty simple free product called ZaraRadio. Has some quirks but does most of what I need, worth a look for you also?

Its we are students and we were wanting to just have a play about with it to see how it works and learn how to use it, The bloke on the phone didn't want us to give it bad reviews if he sold it us without support packages. Also if I buy Adobe Audition, Microsoft Word or anything else I would get a discount because of the fact we are students and the fact that we are buying in bulk.

I have had bad reviews about myriad 4 anyhow so he has probably done me a favour.

£60 per month sounds like you are getting it heavily discounted.

From memory, RCS used to do educational discounts from student radio stations.

Wasn't discounted it was the "hobby licence" they sell to people who use it for things like discos.

the £60 per month was just for the software to use on our own computers and that was each so it would have been £780 per month.

Its good software from what I have used it for its just as students we don't have that sort of money.

iMediaTouch works pretty well. I'm not expecting it to be cheap to have on 13 computers though.

    Hi RadioBloke198,

My name is David and I was the person you spoke to on the telephone at P Squared.

We offer a heavily discounted pack of Licenses for Myriad for all Student / Community and Hospital Radio stations - this includes 3 Studio Playout Licenses, Music Scheduling and Advert scheduling and 1 year of Office Hours technical support and a days training in East Yorkshire.

We also offer Myriad for personal / hobby use at the price I quoted.

You asked if it would be cheaper if you didn't need the support that was included in that package.

I said that we don't like selling our software without support, as without the back up of our technical team (or the training) you may get frustrated by the way it does or doesn't work. This is especially the case on PC's that we haven't supplied and we don't know the quality (or model numbers) of the PC components used.
Therefore we don't like that frustration to get in the way of your experience with our software and to become a source of upset that you shouldn't have purchased it in the first place.

Although we are the UKs largest provider of broadcast software specifically designed for radio broadcasters we are not the size of Adobe or Microsoft, we do like to protect the reputation of our software and our service. It is a specialised suite of software which has not been designed for the home user market, and therefore the more people that purchase it, the more support staff we need to employ ready to deal with those additional enquires.

I'm sorry that you felt that I didn't deal with your enquiry in the way you would've liked.

If you would like to speak to me further about this, I will be available in the office on Monday from midday onwards.

    Regards

Well, you can't ask for much more than that.
    Huge respect to David Boulton.

I really dislike the way students seem to expect things to come cheap because they are students. This is an incredibly complex suite of software which costs local / community radio stations thousands of pounds.

If you want to learn how it works talk your uni / college into buying it from PSquared.

I've dealt many times with PSquared over the years and can totally support them and the way they do business. A post from David on here just goes to show what kind of people they are.

I am not the person you spoke to I am another one plus we have found a better deal elsewhere. Also one of the other students uses Myriad 4 elsewhere and says that he wants to downgrade to Myrad 3.6 because he finds 4 is too unstable and not user friendly enough. Thank you though for following up the conversation we had.

I've been in the broadcasting biz a long time and on both sides of the fence. There are pro's that accept that software that is reliable, bullet proof and that does not come cheap. Support packages are totally the norm in the business and having been on the sales/support side some years ago, I learned that those who say they don't need support and refuse to pay for it, are those that that will hose the install, place it on weaker hardware, break it and then squeal like pigs when support is refused.

In my view, a good business is one that is also capable of refusing a sale if it means a lot of trouble.

Kudos for Myriad. Professional broadcasting software that may need support at 3am because it has (or the hardware has) died and revenue is in the tank, is and never will be a 3 quid app in the Apple Store!

Doesn't help to slag off a version because a friend of friend says so. A lot of us have been round the block to sniff that BS a mile off....

Radiobloke, I'd give up now pal - you are exactly the type of person who just isn't suited to the radio business and how it operates.

The facts were presented to you and suddenly it wasn't you who made the call...

Hope your free version of some shonky playout works out for you!!

Radio isnt something you can "play"'at. Wanna do it right and build a career?? Invest in the best equipment / software.

Like your future in radio - I'm done with this thread!!

It's clear that RadioBloke is just starting out. He may of come across a little rude, but don't we all do that, make mistakes etc at the start of our radio career?

I'd of expected a slightly more amicable and constructive reply and direction towards another FM, especially from yourself. What sort of example is that to set? You're almost as bad as the OP himself.

Huge respect to P squared though, I've used their software and its fab.

If the op just wants something to play about with then he doesn't need Myriad. There must still be thingd like wave cart etc about that were either free or very very chesp. I remember once seeing someone use a thing called mixopia i think. Totally crap but you get what you pay for. If you want to practice yourskills op then anything will do because if you learn your craft then you can produce something devent no matter how bad the equipment. Good playout systems don't turn crap broadcasters into good ones.

If op you are planning a career in radio then you should understand the value of your product. You will likely be freelance at some point and your product is yourself. When you know what your worth and what you can earn because you're good will you want someone calling you arrogant becase you won't work for a quarter of that.

I would love to run rcs or enco in my home studio but it would be pointless and I can't afford it so I do without. In fact I also want a Fararri but can't afford itso I hv to make do with my Ford.

Also just because you have been trsined on Myriad doen't mean thats all you can use. Knowing that system will mean bugger all when you turn up at a station that uses Dalet. You'd actually be pleased but that is another debate.

Actually if you want to try free automation software that is rather powerful, try Rivendell. Runs on Linux and is free. :) Very geeky to setup and very powerful too.

We used this recently for an RSL. Works fine and is user friendly, flexible and free but has no scheduler for the music so we used Stationplaylist Creator to create the music playlist and just played the songs in the Playitlive carts and ad boxes.

    Interesting (PlayIt software)

I once knew of a hospital radio station who wanted to use this programme a while ago... probably one of the easiest programmes to use... but if I remember - there was no actual 'DSP' plug-ins available to enhance the audio quality...and without a DSP plug-in it sounded very 'flat' if I remember...
