Top Seven Mini League

I wonder if this season, more so than previously, the games where last season's top seven play each other will have a big bearing on where they'll finish this season.

The investments made by Tottenham and Arsenal's signing of Ozil have probably closed the gap on the Manchester clubs and Chelsea and Everton have spent the Fellaini money very well. Liverpool have most of the season with Sturridge and Coutinho, who improved their fortunes considerably since January, so will surely improve on last season too.

As of 22nd September, it currently looks like:

It'll be interesting to see how this shapes up as the season progresses. Next up we have Tottenham vs Chelsea.

Will things even up when City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton play away to tougher teams? Will United, Chelsea and Tottennam fare better once they've entertained their rivals?

    Chelsea 22
    Manchester United 20
    Manchester City 17
    Everton 15
    Tottenham 15
    Arsenal 11
    Liverpool 9

    Can't be bothered doing goal difference, Everton above Spurs on alphabetical order.

    Sounds about right. Our undoing was dropping too many points to the likes of QPR, Southampton etc.

    It does illustrate that City, Arsenal and Liverpool have yet to be truly tested away from home and that Chelsea and United have - once that situation evens itself up, we may see the landscape change a little.

    Interesting. As any fervent Gooner will tell you our record against the big 3 is awful. That has to change before we become challengers again. We play all of them before Christmas, where we are after those games will tell us wether its 4th place trophy or better.

    It's looking good for Chelsea - four tough games, three away and five points gathered. Although City were unfortunate to lose - but it's points on the board that matters.

    Next week we have Arsenal vs Liverpool and Everton vs Spurs...

    Everton vs Tottenham to follow tomorrow.

    I would say next week's United vs Arsenal game is key if United have any aspirations to get back into the title race - recent wins against cannon fodder is not a true test of whether things are turning around but next week definitely is - as the table shows, they need to start picking up more points against competitors. Massive game considering it could end with United either 5 points off Arsenal or, worse case scenario, 11 points.

    City and Chelsea seem to be capable of raising it for the big games yet slipping up against lesser sides.

    Tottenham's lack of cutting edge could cost them in these games. Soldado's runs are mostly not being fed and he's not the type of forward to create chances for himself.

    Ah, but five sides have games in hand over United :D

    It will be very interesting to see what bearing these fixtures have over the overall picture, so I decided to keep it going to find out - especially in a season where the top seven from last season seem a lot closer together than has historically been the case.

    Ahh don't ruin it for me now!

    I think this season, this sort of table could prove to be all over the place, with all the teams there capable of beating each other.
    So one week one could be top, the next someone else could be!

    But it will be good to compare the first one, with the one at the end, just to see what eventually the difference will be!

    Tottenham vs Man United up next Sunday, closely followed by Man United vs Everton the following Wednesday.

    Tottenham are the only club of the seven not yet to beat one of the other six but to be fair they've only played one of them at home.

    Interestingly not a single one of the 14 games thus far has resulted in an away win (unless I've messed up somewhere) - just goes to show how close things are. Tottenham are looking the most vulnerable consideringh they've played five games and have yet to win one.

    City do have quite a few of their rivals to play away from home, so it will be very interesting to see how they do there, considering their general away form this season.

    Hopefully we can get our act together sooneer rather than later as well.
