Connecting mp3 player to stereo

I heard you can connect an mp3 player to a stereo's headphone socket with a 3.5mm lead. I tried it, but it doesn't work.

Why on Earth would you want to do that?! You're very lucky if you haven't damaged your MP3 player!

Thats not going to do anything.

The headphone socket on a stereo is for exactly that. Connecting a set of headphones to. It's an output socket.

If you are trying to connect your MP3 player to your stereo in order to listen to it through the stereo, you need to connect it to an input socket.

Ideally, you want some form of line-out (which a lot of MP3 players won't have) on your MP3 player. Failing that, you can use the normal headphone socket but watch the volume you set it to. Keep it very low to start with.

At the stereo end, connect it line-in or aux-in or something like that. It may be 3.5mm, it may be twin phono, it might even be something else, but it's unlikely. If you don't have these, you could try using mic-in but thats a last resort.

Line-out to line-in/aux-in should sound great.

Headphone to mic-in will sound pretty crap, but it should work.

lol, well that's what I thought when I read it online - how's it gonna work if it's an output socket.

You just need an mp3/audio lead. Easy enough to get from Ebay.
