As far as i'm aware iTunes recognises most CDs by using details somebody else has entered into it's database. The tracks aren't usually named on the CD itself.

It doens't have anything to do with it being free, it's because it's a new CD that probabbly hasn't been entered into their database.

If i'm wrong then i'm sure somebody will correct me

I think you're right, glyn. It's not hard-coded onto the disc itself as you get the odd occasion where it names the wrong order, and in iTunes there's an option to submit track names yourself.

I think it has a code in it that it check up on a database, then downloads and tags the songs.

*Edit*

Just found this on freedb, iTunes uses one of the others through, but works the same I think lol

1.1. What is freedb?
freedb is a database to look up CD information using the internet. This is done by a client (a freedb aware application) which calculates a (nearly) unique disc ID for a CD in your CD-Rom and then queries the database. As a result, the client displays the artist, CD-title, tracklist and some additional info.
