Connecting an ipod touch to free wifi...

Apologies if anybody has brought this up before but I couldn't see a thread. I have a 16gb Ipod Touch and when i'm outside it will recognise, pick up and 'connect' (tick and everything) to free wireless networks. However, when I go to Safari and try to use the internet it tells me it is not connected.

Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Could be lots of things:

1. It's an open network but you access through their server. Places like travelodge/the cloud have open networks but you are directed through a server that you need to pay to use.

2. The network is on the edge of it's range and you're dropping to much info.

3. It's an open network in a public place so it's getting hammered

4. It's a wifi point not connected to the Internet.

Really depends on the network. If it's all of them, I'd be concerned, especially if it's free national express wifi or cafe wifi. If it's just random free wifi in the street, you have no idea where it could be coming from etc and as Kev suggests it could just have a bad signal. It's something that happens to me, but usually when I know specifically the free wifi is meant to work, it works.

I'm having the same at problem, it logs on fine at home but when i leave the house and try to get on to that, doesn't work for me either.

First thing I think I'd do is download the free Wifi finder from the apps store and try to get an idea of what's out there in the areas that you are most likely to use it.

I landed up taking a subscription to Thecloud (£3.99 per month for Touch) purely based on the availability in Central London. Having said that I occasionally drink in a pub in Romford that has two free networks covering it.

All Wi-Fi networks are different. We have a a Wi-Fi network covering our local town. It lets you connect but you can't view anything as you need to change certain settings. My friend who I used to work with used to help admin the network. As the iPhone is only a phone and doesn't use much bandwidth he agreed to allow my phone access. I then got the iPhone 3G and pretty much never see my friend anymore. I tried looking through all the settings on my old iPhone but I can't find any that would allow me to connect with the 3G.

this happens aswell on the likes of BTopenzone, it classes itself as an open connection but then you need to either login with a valid voucher code or though one of the selection of options or you will need to buy airtime
