I have BT coming out to look at my line as my SNR is awful and my voice call quality if terrible.

Basically I have a standard NT5e master socket, then I have cabled to a second master socket using solid core Cat6 cable.
From the second master socket I have run about 15m of solid core Cat6 cable into the study.

On the study socket I have a single modem DG834GT and a set of quad DECT handset running off a single master base station.

I have cleared my cabling as a cause of poor SNR as I disconnected it all and plugged the modem into the test socket. i have also plugged in a standard wired handset and call quality is poor

But BT will want to do everything they can to make me pay the call out charge, so I have a couple of questions.

1. Surely my poor SNR on the ADSL will affect my call quality, as the SNR is for the general line not just the ADSL.

2. I have several neighbours with ADSL, why are they not having any issues.

3. There were 4 phone lines coming into my house previously, how have they affected my call quality. (Previous owner ran a business from home)

4. My line is between 2 - 3 miles from the exchange, does this affect call quality.

Can anyone think of any other questions to ask?

the SNR is for the adsl, though 7 times out of 10 a poor snr(is it really high or really low?) can be the result of problems with the copper.


will probably be an isolated fault on your copper pair(most likely a corroded connection)



they will have no effect on your line



yes, the distance and make-up of the line are the main factors in determining the quality of the adsl signal you receive.



are they sending a regular pstn engineer to look at the poor voice quality or are they sending a b/band engineer to look at the poor signal quality? if a regular pstn then prey that the noise is still present when they attach their test phone into the test socket, if it is then by fixing that fault it will almost certainly improve your adsl signal.

They are sending out a regular PSTN engineer as I have very poor volume on my line. I really have to talk very loudly to make myself heard.

The guy will not be leaving the house until he proves to me that the poor sound quality is the fault of my handsets.

Besides most of the engineers are nice people, if I explain nicely what the problem is they are likely to help.

God no, that gives the guy something to aim for.

What I meant was, he may find it threatening if told he can't leave until the fault is fixed. He may also be more likely to just leave and raise charges for an abortive visit if he finds nothing wrong and has taken a dislike to you, instead of investigating further.
