OK in a nutshell then!
2G refers to the GSM type mobile systems used by Vodafone, 02, Orange and T-Mobile currently. This is a digital system and has been upgraded for data communication with a system called GPRS. Networks equipped with GPRS (all 4 in the UK are already) are sometimes referred to as 2.5G as they can do many of the tasks that pure 3G was previously only capable of (like receiving video-clips and MMS services). 3G is the name given to the third generation of high speed mobile phone technology and the UK has chosen W-CDMA as the standard for it's networks. All of the existing companies have a 3G licence and in addition Hutchison 3G UK (Three) also have one. In theory the 3G service should be better than the previous 2G/2.5G but early experience of the Three network does not exactly confirm this. Further inforation on the different mobile systems can be found here: 3-G Net Information Information about 3UK's services and user coments can be found here 3G Newsroom + Forum Hope that helps! |

And in case you're interested the "G" stands for 'Generation'.
1st Generation mobiles were the old analogue types (sometimes called TACS and ETACS). |

All UK networks plan to have 3G up and running next year. All of them want to get it right from when they launch hence they should launch about a year after 3 did. 3 have been critsised by the other networks for makeing a mockery of 3G. They have a good point, 3 is a shambles and is best avoided.

you are indeed correct, 3 is a complete shambles and I have had one horrendous experience after another with them.
The signal is poor, and it is usually falling back on to 2G, and thats in and around Manchester. When the signal changes from 2G to 3G, there is a period where the phone *appears* fine, but is in fact off the network. This means that I am effectively disconnected dozens of times a day without my knowledge. (this I was told from the 3 technical helpdesk) I use the Nec e606 handset and it easts battery life for fun. I can usually go 8 hours between charges. Less if I want to say, oooh, make/receive a call. And as for the customer service....well, you decide. Of the times I have called them, ranging from 4pm through until 3am, the average time waiting in a queue was about 40minutes, and then, I was being advised by a, undoubtedly very friendly, chap in India whom I could not understand a word of. Glad I decided to move with the times. Shame the times moved back to the 80s. |

Quentye, I have no problem with the 3 networks, I bought my phone from a reputable dealer! I have heard problems from certain (ahem) aquintances of mine which have recieved their phone from dubious sources and had "used" sim cards put in!

Excellent choices, I'm also a big fan of Where I end and you begin! Saw them live in Manchester on 22/11/2003, they we're absolutley fantastic, on of the highlights of the show was The Gloaming which I'm not that keen on on the album, but believe me, the live version is superb!

I havent seen them live. The closest I have is the I Might Be Wrong (live recordings). And Meeting People Is Easy DVD. Their newer stuff has to be a be different live. I suppose thats how you enjoyed The Gloaming more. Not one of my favorites either. I like their new material even though one of my freinds who got me into Radiohead in the first place hates their new stuff.

I dunno the new stuff just seems to make more sense live, the tickets were £34 each but well worth it. Totally off topic but does the Meeting people is easy DVD have much live stuff on it? I might get a copy coz I want more live stuff by them!

Meeting People Is Easy has snippets of live footage high points being an acoustic snippet of How To Dissapear Completley and the audience sininging Creep. If you want some great live stuff check out the CD single of Fake Plastic Trees which has amazing acoustic versions of Bullet Proof ..I Wish I Was, Street Spirit (Fade Out) and Fake Plastic Trees.
I will try to get back on topic by saying u can use a 2G phone to download Radiohead ringtones
