well i think they are all pretty poor , and no-ones mentioned the awful cover version of i'm your man by shane richie not xmassy i know but it may well make it to no one.
the pop idols cover adds nothing to the original at all so theres no point to releasing that , the darkness lead singer guy sounds like a bad female singer strangling a cat with no obvious tune.
the cheeky girls i havent heard but i suspect it sounds just like all their other singles, one tune, different "cheeky" words.
bo selector...ok i didn't think much of that either but the video makes up for the lack of a decent tune.
mmmmm very dissappointing this year
”

Shane Richie didn't even make it to No.1 this week.

I actually think this year is good for Christmas songs!

Bo Selecta and The Darkness, are the only 2 proper Christmas tunes we've had in years! that are decent!

I love Bo Selecta's one, its so catchy, and very very funny!

Shamon!!

NOT:
Cheeky girls
Atomic kitten
pop 'idols' - they need to work their way to number one the proper way

Would love:
THE DARKNESS - c'mon they've worked hard to get where they are now, exactly what the cheeky girls and any reality tv people can say (of course excluding the Fame academy lot, they rule)

Failing that:
Avid marrion

At least The darkness and Avid can say that their songs are ORIGINAL CHIRSTMAS SONGS! (cough) bloody pop idol lot (cough)

I'd love Gary Jules 'Mad World' to get it, just cause it's a great track and not Christmasy!... Bah Humbug!

Failing that, I'd be happy with The Darkness or Avid Merion

I hope it's Proper Crimbo.
But, if not, I hope it's The Cheeky Girls or the Pop Idols, just to p*ss a lot of people off.

It'll be all the more sweeter to seriously piss Simon Cowell off though

And the cheeky girls. thats an original song as well!
Cheeky girls are actually NOT manufactured, the record company signed them as seen.
And three out of their four singles have been originals not covers.
Yes, very cheesy originals, but at least they aint all covers.

Id rather be seen doing covers than the crap they come out with

Im not entirely sure on the definition of 'Manufactured' but If it means coming through the pop idol/fame academy esque route then they are. They only got singed up for making a fool out of themselves on Pop Stars the rivals..

manufactured is when a record company decides on an image/music format and holds auditions specifically to choose people who they can mould or manufacture into the image they want.
eg The spice girls, Busted, (who went through several line up changes on the orders of the record company), Westlife, steps.
to name a few.

NOT manufactured, Alex Parks, Will Young are examples of artists who did find fame through a tv show, but as themselves, and not conforming to the accepted 'pop star' manufactured image.

anyway, the cheeky girls have made a million quid now, due to them and there mother writing most of the songs and keeping control. A nice little earner for making a fool of yourself I think.
yes, its simple music, but harmless enough. good luck to them I say!.

anyway, sometimes manufactured artists can produce good music, just like non manufactured can produce utter garbage.
and vica versa of course.

It has to be The Darkness. Great song, very funny video. If Christmas Time doesn't get to no.1 then I hope it will be Avid Merrion or Gary Jooles.

I've just seen The Darkness perform Bells End live... Please buy it! There's never been a band who deserve it more, they were truly awesome.

Quite Simply it has to be THE DARKNESS, nothing else even warrants a release in my mind. How anyone could want the Pop Idols to get to Number 1 is beyond me, and the cheek of Simon Fuller to take possibly the best Christmas Song ever and lower it to the standard of Pop Idol is an absolute disgrace, they should never have been given permission to sing this song.

Unfortunately, the GREAT Bristish Public will probably go for the Pop Idols because of all the hype aurrounding the TV show, but if the people who have contributed to this thread go out and buy the Darkness and get a few friends to buy it as well, maybe we can have the first great christmas No 1 in years.

We have to stop Pop Idols from getting to No 1, poor old John Lennon will be turning in his grave.............

Well me and my clan of friends in our community are avid fans (no pun intended) of The Darkness and we are all going out to buy the Darkness Single to add to our collection of Permission to Land.

LOL yup, gotta say this year seems to be flooded with christmas number 1 hopefuls!

My fave is definately Avid Merrion, got a bet on him so if he wins ill get £17 back yay, also had one on the fast food rockers, just because alot of kids buy them and parents for their younger ones, if that comes in £200 will be mine wahoo!

seems like everyone has forgot the fact that the sugababes are releasing too lost in you as well! should have thought they'd be a pretty big contender, as they have a huge following, as do atomic kitten! also, what about noddy and basil brush? surely a big hit with all the mothers of children who are young, easy stocking filler for them?

Well I'm not sure I've even heard it, so can't comment! But I have just seen Kelly and Ozzy Osbourne - Changes on Magic, and I think its pretty cool, so maybe that has a chance?

Nope, you've got me, hon.

They're a really bad Led Zep cover band.
I hope they go away soon.

I hope it's Katie Melua

Let's have some original music

Not pop idols doing it for cash

Not a queen mickey take

REAL music

I actually like the Darkness' xmas tune, the first of their songs that I can get into because they are not pretending not to be a novelty act this time.

Bo Selecta for No.1 though, if there was any justice

This is turning into a bit of a The Darkness love in, isn't it?

Personally I don't rate them. I like rock and metal, from the old stuff, right to new stuff, and they're OK. Until the singer goes falsetto and next door's dog starts barking. I'd rather listen to the original bands. But anyway....

I'm curious why people care about the Xmas number one anymore? I used to write off December pop music as a kid, as you would get some real cheesy stuff released. I think the only difference now is that the cheesy stuff gets released all year around. I love music, but it's sad to see how the UK has degenerated from being a focal point of innovative and popular bands, to manufactured rubbish clogging up the charts. There are still great bands around, they just don't seem to mean as much.

no and yes

I do love the darkness, Ive got thier album and hardly ever stop playing it, great stuff

But the single is just pants imo and a bad rip-off of Queens 'somebody to love me'.

Avid Merrion stands a damn good chance - it's worth bearing in mind that the single is actually a DVD, and contains the full directors cut of the video. Which is about 8 minutes as it is! Bo Selecta fans will be out in their droves for it.

Proper Chrimbo for me!

cudn't agree more, but i do like the darkness! however, there are many better bands about. a lot unrecognised, because of the stream of crappy cheese, just look at the record of the year song for proof! have to say the best song in that lot was evanescence
