newbie question. does the inclusion of a usb port on the pvr mean that i could record/transfer programmes to my laptop?

hi mufrcok the PVR won't let you record to USB but yes you can transfer some content. There are limitations like not being able to transfer encripted HD content and a limitation of file size of 4GB using FAT32 formated drives

Regarding encrypted HD (assuming BBC HD is encrypted), is it possible to copy these programmes to an external hard drive just to archive them and then to copy them back to the FoxSat to watch?

Hi Tim welcome to the forum unfortunately it's not possible to transfer encrypted recordings however it is possible to create a hd recording without encryption. Setting the box to non-freesat mode and then turning off and then rebooting you can make a manual recording of the non-freesat stream by pressing record just as the programme starts
