By Over the Air Download (OAD). Up coming downloads are published on the DTG site for all manufacturers but you have to keep checking as it only has current and next week ahead - http://www.dtg.org.uk/retailer/download_schedule.pl

This isn't quite true - the OTA update ONLY updates the Freeview tuner part, the sets own firmware requires an engineer to do it.
