My old Hi-Fi was playing up recently and I decided to maybe contemplate buying a new one. It was a Panasonic 5 cd changer with the twin tape decks, the design that Panasonic seem to churn out regularly. The sound on this old one I thought was pretty good but the tape deck had packed in years ago and then the Aux connection played up and the cd laser seemed to need cleaning too often.

Anyway, my sister give me one she had stored away, the same Panasonic design but a later discontinued model (SA-AK47) in pristine condition with the usual 5 cd changer and tape decks. It looks a pretty impressive piece of kit with flashing lights, hefty speakers with Sub-Woofers and equaliser settings etc etc.

First of all, who needs a 5 cd changer? You put 5 cds in and you have to take them all out again. I only listen to one cd at a time, and if I decide I want to listen to another I'll simply eject and put another one in. The only way I can see a need for "5" is if I'm having a party and very busy getting drunk!

But the main issue and disapointment is the bass which is well over the top even on the "Flat" equaliser setting, it's more like a horrible intermittant hum undermining whatever is playing and giving you a headache!

I also have a Logic3 Soundstation (£9.99 Amazon) on my desktop and I feel even this little system has a far more subtle sound.

So I can see this Panasonic crap going back in storage. Anybody have similar experiences, views. or recomendations?

Try removing the subwoofers, or adjust the equaliser until you get the sound you like.

Have you tried swapping the speakers with your old system?

I listen to music on my 5.1 system with the subwoofer off as the bass is OTT otherwise.

Hi - Adam, thanks for reply

Messed about with the Equaliser quite a lot and will probably continue to do so. It has two pairs of wires going into each speaker one pair for bass no doubt. Do you think I should try disconecting the bass pairs and see what happens, sod it I'll give it a go anyway. Back shortly >>>>>

Unfortunately chucked old speakers out, were working spot on as well.

So, 2 pairs of wires into each speaker: red & Black/blue & grey. Disconnected the blue & grey ones and get a lot of muffle especially on voices. Will continue to experiment before chucking it out of window.

It sounds like the tweeters have blown if all you are getting is constant bass...

I wouldn't say "constant bass" just all frequencies heavy, coarse and shrill at any setting, too big for it's boots!

Maybe these manufacturers have lost the plot! Think it'll be going the journey before long.

There are a couple of Sony systems doing the rounds with big sub-woofers (and a Panasonic one) which i have heard and the bass is just way over the top.

These systems are really for blasting out as oppose to just listening to music. (Ideal for a teenager.lol)

I prefer a decent system with a completely seperate sub woofer.

Thanks for input Andy.

I've now unplugged and will be listening to my music (via comp) on my little desktop soundstation here until I come across a decent bigger set up. Incidently, I would reccomend this desktop audio (or similar) to anyone and if you can get it for £9.99 it's very good value indeed.

P.s Any teenagers want to buy a panaSONIC for £50 ?

I have recently brought these for my PC because they are crisp and clear - not much bass though even through a small sub-box:

As for the Panasonic...i am still using my Panasonic 29 year old stacker system! Last week I travelled from Birmingham to Buckinghamshire just for a pair of Panasonic speaker boxes which were then next model up from mine. I replaced the main drivers and they look like new...and believe me, you do not need a subwoofer
