Hi all
First of all would like to say what a very well run forum.
Hope you can help.
We are moving house next week and wish to buy a new tv and cinema system. Budget wise we are hoping to pay up to around £900 max for the TV, and then maybe another £150 - £200 for the cinema system.
The lounge size is 14'6 by 11'6.
We saw this TV online - LG 50inch (PG4000) plasma, 1080P at £850 including wall bracket. I then thought that maybe this TV is too big and should go for a 46". Our needs are as follows.
We dont have SKY HD, just normal freeview at present. We do watch alot of films and try where poss to get Blueray. I use my PS3 regularly also.
Could do with some helpful tips on whether to go for LCD or Plasma, and also what TV and where to go for my budget. I am more interested in advice for the TV, but advice on the sound system may also be helpful.
Many thanks in advance
Noel

Only you can decide, many posters on here will come along with their tape measures and give you the optimum viewing distances, I always wanted a huge screen and now have a 46inch in my bedroom and love it.

There isn't much difference between 46in and 50in, except when carrying the box in. My Mum has a 50in Plasma in the living room, it's a bigger room so it seems a little smaller.

I use mine with my PC, games are great so I'd say go large.

You can find a calculator for the recommended viewing distance vs size of the screen here

Basically to get full impact of an HD image you must sit closer to the screen as you'd expect. As for plasma vs LCD, see for yourself, both have plus and minus sides to them.

If you are going for a 50 inch TV, Plasma is a must .LCD TVs at this size are very expensive and are inferior picture wise, the best picture I have seen is by a Samsung 7 series and that is backed up by reviews on the subject!

My own personal preference would be plasma, simply because SD will be what you will be mainly viewing and SD looks better on a plasma than LCD.

As for the size - a little harder to advise, I don't know your room layout, the size looks OK and would take a 50", but it depends where you will be positioning the TV and where/how far you will be sat from it. 50" sounds big but in time you do get used to it. The PS3/Bluray would come alive on a 50" screen.

To give you an idea how far you will need to sit for HD/PS3...

If the TV is 1080 - 7.5ft

If the TV is 768 - 9ft

Just be aware SD will look a lot poorer at these distances, you can compromise, but the further you sit from the recommended distance you will start to lose definition on HD content.

For the sound system I'd recommend the Yamaha AV63 package - slightly over £200. It will not give you HD audio from Bluray but you will get DD5.1 and DTS.

It consist of the Yamaha RXV363 and Yamaha's NSP110 speaker package.

If you want HD audio then the cheapest entry model would be the Sony STRDG820 @ £230, you would then need a fairly decent speaker package to compliment the newer formats True HD and DTS HD MA. You could use add NSP110 making the total price £300, then at a later date upgrade the speakers.

Hi - thanks for your replys so far.
What do you guys think about this TV ? http://www.digital-point.co.uk/model...er=pricerunner
Looking to spend around £900 roughly. Cant seem to find any reviews on this. Or, if anyone knows of any 50" Plasma with a 1080 display I would be grateful to hear from you.
Many thanks

Have a look at the LG 50PG4000 - £848-49

Oh, I see you have.

I have had an LG plasma for over three years, it's been excellent. I wouldn't have any reservations in buying another.
