Hi Guys and Gals

ok, my Parents 5.1 system will arrive in a few days

i would love some advice on "how to set it up the best way"
does anyone have this exact system?
they dont have a PS3 so dont have to worry about any of that

i want to connect a Samsung Upscaling DVD Player to the Sony AV Receiver using a Digital Coaxial Cable

then i want to plug the BT Vision Box into it using Digital Optical Cable

will adding both these things that way give me 5.1 DTS Sound etc?

i understand this Sony system has a built in DVD player in it anyway?
so i will be plugging this system to my Plasma TV using a HDMI Cable
by using the HDMI cable this way, will i be getting the picture and sound ??
and will it be 5.1 ??

sorry to appear stupid, but im confused already

Thanks Very Much

As already explained........

You can connect the BT Vision via optical providing the Sony system will allow digital input assign when using HDMI.

If you want to connect the Samsung DVD player you will need an optical splitter, a 2way auto switch will do the job unless the BT Visions optical output is not disabled when in standby, then you will need the 3way manual version.

If you only want to use the Sony DVD player the same rule applies in reference to the BT Vision/optical input/assignment.

What you should end up with is.........

Sony HDMI -> TV HDMI 1 - This will give you picture and DD5.1/DTS sound on DVD playback.

BT Vision HDMI -> TV HDMI 2
BT Vision Optical out -> Sony Optical in - this will give you picture and DD5.1 providing you can assign digital inputs when connected by HDMI.

Yes.

It upscales to 1080p, so I don't see why you need the other DVD player. Mine is connected up to a Sky+ HD box and a Sony TV exactly as Deacon1972 says (substitute BT Vision for Sky+ HD).

Job done!

Harry, like Deacon says

are you able to get 5.1 sound through optical on your SKY HD, even when your using HDMI from the Sony DAZ260 inbuilt DVD Player unit into your telly, or does it conflict like Deacon says it might?

they have 3 x HDMI inputs on their Plasma telly here

There's no conflict as I only have the DZ260 and the Sky box connected to each other by optical cable. To get 5.1 sound from the Sky box I just set the input on the DZ260 to 'TV', and the input on the TV to the HDMI port the Sky box is connected to.

Works for me!

Hi Harry and Deacon....again! sorry!

will i actually get sound from the in built DVD Player on the Sony DZ260 just using a HDMI cable going into the TV set?
will i hear 5.1 surround sound?

some guy here said i wouldn't get any sound, only a picture?? now i AM Confused
http://whathifi.com/forums/t/222071.aspx

i take it that if i want to hear the sound from my Samsung DVD Player going into the DZ260 using a digital Coax cable, i will have to press the TV Button on the DZ260 to be able to hear the sound from the Samsung DVD Player? or is there another button?
but seeing as the BT Vision is plugged into the Optical input, would i have to turn off the BT Box in order to hear the Samsung? jesus! im so thick!!
i want sure if there was any conflict at all?

The Sony is a home cinema. Of course you will get surround sound when playing DVDs on the Sony - as the Sony produces its own surround sound. It makes no difference how the Sony is connected to your telly, cos your telly doesn't produce surround sound anyway. You can use HDMI, scart, component, composite, s-video, anything you like to connect your DVD player to your telly, because the audio is irrelevant. You will get surround sound from the Sony even if the telly isn't switched on, or the Sony isn't even connected to the telly (though you'll have difficulty selecting the main feature that you want to watch if you can't see what you are doing).

Yes you will, the HDMI on this particular system is only there to provide the picture. The audio decoding will be done inside the player and output via the speakers.

Just looked at the online manual, it looks like pressing the TV button corresponds to both digital inputs, optical and coaxial. It does say digital has priority over analogue, what it doesn't say is whether one of the digital inputs has priority over the other.

At a guess I'd say if you wanted to listen to either device one would need to be placed in standby. The only way to be sure would be to connect the two boxes and try it, it'll either work or won't.

Thanks Deacon, that's what i thought... will just try the standby method and see what happens

the system wont arrive until this Friday or Monday according to Dixons...
i have already ordered the Digitial Optical and Coaxial Cables from Amazon.... so were all good to go

if i notice no difference using the Samsung DVD Player in terms of picture or sound Quality compared to the in built Sony System, then we will stick it on Ebay or find some use for it im sure, we got it FREE with out Samsung Plasma TV anyway
