Grand designs
Failed to record last night. Upon checking it seems that the muppets at C4 have actually switched series. Digiguide shows last week episode as 7 of 8 (it doesn't have a series number) and this weeks as 8 or 13 (next weeks is 9 of 13).
If anyone's interested last nights episode is repeated on Saturday C4 20:00. No idea if or when the last episode of the current series will be shown. |

It was Grand Designs Revisited, a repeat of an episode first broadcast 2 years ago with 5 minutes of new footage tacked on the end. I think the change in series link was justified.

It was the change of series that yielded the charge of muppetry. There they are, showing a new series of eight and they get to episode 7 and then jump to episode 8 of an old series. I suppose it could be because episode 8 of the new series wasn't finished in time and they decided to hold it over but the fact the the episode number was contiguous and the series changed made it look as if they'd just picked the wrong series. |

There are certain C4/ Five shows that consistently either over run or have series link problems, examples are Grand Designs and The Gadget Show so I find it best not to bother series linking these and instead just put in a weekly repeat and pad 10 mins on the end, I have now never missed the end or had a failed recording, last night GD recorded fine, admittedly they should record using the Series Link and sending an e-mail to the broadcasters is a good idea but you still have missed the show!

Make that 3 minutes of new footage as the recording ended prematurely again! Why can't channel 4 sort this out? I'm assuming it's their fault?
also the advert things seem to be every 7 or 8 minutes in line with Sky adverts so when the repeats are on Sky 240 they are already in time and dont need editing ?? or so it seems to me |

all CH 4 things start early in the evening I have noticed !!
It's this fact, together with its unusually long actual running time that leads to the programme overrunning every time it's shown. Most programmes that are nominally 'one hour' (including embedded adverts) actually run several minutes short. but GD goes right to the line - every time, meaning that late start, together with C4's inability to transmit accurate programme info, leads to the end of the program being lost every time. At least it's just the talking heads at the end that gets chopped so not too much of a hardship. |

You wouldn't get the programme if there was a major change but I'm not confident that the broadcasters handle that properly anyway. (Plus, it doesn't tend to happen at the times I watch). My main objection to that technique is that if you use it under circumstances where, say, you are recording a programme from 20:00 to 21:00 and two programmes starting at 21:00 then it's going to foul up. This often happens for me when there are programmes on BBC4 at 20:00 and 21:00 and something else at 21:00. This is why we need 3 and 4 tuner PVR's ![]() Just wait a few years and the tuners will be cheap as chips! |
