I saw Ray twice as Doody & thought he was absolutely amazing, I can't wait to see him as Danny (as I, rather my bank balance fears I must!) He does seem a bit young to me, but I really think he can pull it out the bag, cos he seems so committed to it - and it is a blast. I just hope they get someone relatively young to play Sandy alongside him!

You might be being helpful, you might be agreeing with the dig made by the poster you are quoting, but either way, I'd advise caution.

I saw "Grease" three times in Manchester during the Shane Richie run, once with the understudy rather than Mr Richie.

The understudy was great in the role but the atmosphere in the theatre was palpably reduced from that during either of the performances when Shane Richie was on stage.

The understudy can be fabulous but not having the "big name" there - that is to say, the person that a fair amount of the audience has come to see, can reduce the atmosphere considerably.

I haven't seen him play Doody either, but I think Ray is going to be hampered by his looks. He doesn't sound or look old enough or cool enough to play Danny. Perhaps his acting skills are good enough to get over those rather major obstacles, I don't know. Admittedly I don't see in Ray what some other people see, other than the fact that he is more risky in his skating and is a better dancer than the rest of the celebrities.

Funny you should say hampered by his looks etc because when he landed the part as Doody allot of people when he was doing his interviews for the show made comment how they thought he would suit the part of Danny but that part was already taken.

When Danny got the part from winning grease he was 19
I think ever person bring something different to what ever part they play.

But that's you opinion without seeing him play Doody but obviously you have no plans to see him in Grease to see if you views change so that’s is all it will ever be that you think he is not right for the part.

For Ray this is a part he has wanted to play since a kid I’ve just read an interview from when he was in brookside so it's a dream come true and as we have seen from DOI he will put his all into everything that is put his way

I just think people need to give him a chance before saying he is wrong for the part

I'm sure Ray will do it justice, the guy puts 200% into anything he does.

Well done Ray, combining his acting, singing and dancing must be a dream come true for him.

I couldn't imagine Ray as a shy frightened teenager but he played that part brilliantly.

I've never seen him live but going on Brookside and DOI, he is completely different when performing and can deliver whatever it takes.

People have to remember before they write him off, that Ray was an actor in Brookside and won an award for it. He could be good enough to act Danny's cool manliness if that's required. Don't judge just by what you see in the person because good actors can change their whole character. Costume and makeup also help make people look older or younger as needed.

It's not beyond him - in the rock and roll number he did on DOI I thought he looked pretty cool.

I can't judge his singing but from a dancing and potentially acting point of view I anticipate that he could play the part.

I love Grease the film but both JT and ONJ looked way too old for teenagers.

Roxy would be a better Rizzo.

Roxanne would be a FANTASTIC Rizzo.

Likewise, I think Ray is going to be a fantastic Danny. That style suits him so well. He can sing, he can dance, and as evidenced by this forum plenty of people think he has the perfect looks too. No obstacle in his way.

I personally would like to see this.

just out of interest, who was the understudy?

that is the trouble though with stunt casting, all the people who go for that so called celeb will be pissed off if that person is off ill/on holiday. not usually anything they can do about it as i think the rule is that refunds/exchanges will only be given if the celeb's name is above the title of the show.

No I go because I enjoy these types of shows and Grease was on the list for this year along with Joseph, Mama Mia, Billy Elliot and some further afield from London.

After seeing his attitute to people in person I have made up my opinion of Ray, that may change if I see him at the tour and see how he reacts to people then.
Dont like Chris Fountain or Kyran Bracken either but then it would be boring if we all liked/enjoyed the same people.

So you wont allow brilliant skating to get in the way of a judgemental opinion?

It tells you on the Grease website when you can expect to see the understudy apart from unforeseen circumstances, so you can plan ahead.

Yeah i think grease is quite good at advertising people's holidays in advance. But if they are sick you are just unlucky! Wasn't ray "ill" for his final two shows as doody? I remember being told that and thought they'd be a lot of unhappy fans in the theatre that day

I honestly don't know, but that is what an understudy is there for.
