Youngest ‘Big Brother’ cast member tells her story

“I was completely lied to in the house,” said Boca Raton’s Maradie

Michelle Maradie was on her break between a double shift at J. Alexander’s in Boca Raton,Florida this summer when she got the phone call that changed her life.

What the 20-year-old sophomore at Florida State first mistook for a telemarketing survey turned out to be an interview with one of the casting directors from the well-known reality television series “Big Brother.”

But that was only the first in a string of misjudgments for Maradie.

Twelve hours later she and her father boarded a plane to Los Angeles to “meet the producers,” but in actuality Maradie was the one questions were being fired at.

“I had to take four personality tests to make sure I wasn’t insane,” said Maradie, who was probed by producers on camera, tested extensively and asked to stay mum about the whole thing – all before she was informed as to where the casting director even got her phone number.

When Maradie found out she was chosen for the fourth season of “Big Brother,” themed the ex-factor, and that her name was given by her ex-boyfriend of 4 years who would also be part of the show, she said she was in disbelief.

“We were on good terms, but we hadn’t really talked in a while,” said Maradie of her ex David Lane, but their reunion took a sour turn during the first week of the show when Lane got intimate with another cast member and lied about it.

“I don’t look at him the same, but I’m gonna be civil about it,” said Maradie, who was mislead by most of the other cast members as well.

They had all watched the previous seasons of “Big Brother,” and even decided on alliance strategies to win the half million dollar prize before the show started, according Maradie, who came with almost no prior knowledge of the show, and “just hoped there would be cute guys.”

While most of the cast members were scrambling to forge alliances with each other and dodge being “voted off,” Maradie said she was only trying to make friends.

“I didn’t make any alliances. I just kinda hung out with everyone. I didn’t think they would vote me off,” she said, but viewers saw a different story unfold as Maradie was unknowingly fed to a secret alliance made up of the eight non-exes of the show, including Lane.

“You’re the nice girl, we’re just using you as a pawn,” Maradie was told by cast members who knew all along that she would be evicted.

“Allison was actually wearing my dress the night I was evicted, and she even knew it was going to happen,” Maradie said.

While they were announcing her eviction, Maradie said she was thinking about the surf and turf she had requested for dinner after a week of eating only peanut butter and jelly – one of several sanctions placed on members of the cast from time to time.

“I didn’t think there was even a one percent chance I would be evicted,” she said. “I thought it was a joke, or wrong. Everyone gave me a hug and said they were sorry.”

Lane, who had a chance to save his ex, chose instead to stick with the alliance, which betrayed him the very next week and voted him off.

When she looks back at the tapes, Maradie said she can’t believe how naïve and trusting she was, but the experience has taught her a great deal. Her parents and friends agree.

“That show definitely matured her,” said father Dennis, “Although she made some good friends, she found out that not everybody is her friend.”

In addition to learning a life lesson, Maradie also opened doors for herself in the entertainment business, said her mom, Connie.

“The show had over 40 million viewers. It was the most popular of all four, and people recognize her everywhere,” she said, and a friend from FSU agreed.

“When we go out, lots of older men recognize Michelle,” said Dawn Collier, who also said her friend has wised up to the world since the show.

Maradie appeared last month on the sitcom “Yes Dear,” a spoof on “Big Brother,” and graced the stage of the VH1 Awards – Big in 2003, which aired last night, but she’s not letting the exposure go to her head.

“I’m going to take an acting class next semester and see if I like it,” she said. “The entertainment business is hard to get into, so I’m still going to get a degree.”

I agree with you, but I still feel sorry for her. She was incredibly naive.
