I REALLY liked Philip last night, so I think I'll join in this appreciation thread.

I see you're saying he's from Durham. I said to my OH - he has a Geordie accent but it's different, not totally Newcastle. I guessed he might be from Sunderland instead....

Not a bad guess for a Scot.....? And sorry, I know you're saying Durham's not Geordie! I'm from Paisley and my OH always winds me up that it's part of Glasgow and it's not...so AAAARGH.....I know how that feels, sorry!

But yeah, Phil is one to watch!

I'm glad someone else said this. I made a similar comment last year about one of the Big Brother contestants but a poster with extended family in Durham was having none of it.

Or even better, don't ever make the mistake of speaking to a Mackem at all.

I think he's great, and I think he will win, I don't know why people are saying he is so hard to understand, I understood him perfectly, and I'm not from the Uk, let alone Newcastle.

Sorry but he isn't actually a geordie.
When I first heard him speak I thought he was from Northumberland.

Was I right?

He's from County Durham which is south of Newcastle but it's good you noticed because most people just assume he's a Geordie.

I've spent time in Co. Durham and didn't recognise his accent.

I once worked with someone from Northumberland and they sound alike.

I'll have to listen more carefully

I didn't watch the first episode, but I thought he came across okay in the second episode.

He's certainly my favourite of the guys...

Although they picked on him on YF for being negative the boy's team had a great deal to be -ve about this week so we need to see if he was being perceptive or is just a whinger.

So Rocky turned down a nude shoot but reckons Philip is looking forward to doing one.

I think Philip is a thoroughly obnoxious individual from viewings so far.

But he makes great TV.

Yeah, I don't find him hard to understand either. He has a lovely, deep, manly voice and I love his accent. I have a Taggart-style Glasgow area accent myself so I approve of regional accents!

I agree, Siannah. He certainly seems to have real presence and totally stands out amongst the boys. I wondered if he'd been edited that way for some reason, but, no, I like to think he does have a real magnetism. I hope it's not just my predilection for a really fit bloke that's making me think this way!

I posted earlier on this thread that I thought he was "Geordie" but not from Newcastle - I guessed Sunderland instead. So are Geordies only from Newcastle itself? I guess that's the case judging by the replies on here. It's really interesting.

Strictly speaking they are meant to be. There is one theory that the word Geordie originates from the Jacobite rebellion which was supported by Northumbrians but Newcastle closed it's gates and declared itself for King George - geordies. Another theory is about the name of the miners lamps. I've always found it interesting.

People from the region can easily tell the difference between Northumberland/Durham/Newcastle but if I was from elsewhere I really wouldn't have a clue.

lol....I live just outside Newcastle. Strictly speaking its Newcastle, but generally anyone born within a few miles of the north of the river Tyne qualifies. People are very protective of their identity here. A bit like Scots. I'm not a Geordie, cos I was born in the south, though conceived up here, but my Dad was literally born about a mile from the river, and so were my children; so to my Geordie friends I am a Geordie in all but birth...lol...I came back!!

I grew up in the NE and used to be able to place someone's accent to within a few miles. Since I moved Darn Sarf, I've lost a lot of that ability, but I would say that his accent is more South Durham rather than Newcastle or Sunderland.

It nice to have some regional accents on TV.
