Something strange happened early on, I taped channel 5 and ITV, but turned the tv over to bbc 1 forgetting it was taping the 2 however it let me watch a 3rd channel

I did a quick rewind as well to see if it missed any of the recording but it was perfect.

would only let me view certain channels though, so I'm guessing these must be on the same freq ...

Yes they must be.

To expand slightly, your BBC1, BBC2, & ITV1, regional channels will depend on the postcode you entered when you set the box up. These will be on different frequencies for different regions.

In your example, I couldn't watch BBC1 on Ch101, whilst recording Five, and ITV1 on Ch103. However, I could watch BBC1 London on Ch950, or BBC NI on Ch957. Some combinations of channels will even let you Timeslip (pause Live, and then watch it delayed time) the 3rd channel as well as recording 2 others.

If you have Excel, Graham Thompson has made an excellent application that takes all the hard work out of knowing which combinations of channels work together in this way. You can download it Here.

Rgds.

It's even better than that, if the 2 channels you are recording happen to be on the same transponder then the stb only uses one tuner. The remaining tuner is free to watch any channel (and time shift) using two cables or any channel in the same band (and time shift) using one cable.

In fact with a firmware upgrade it's entirely possible for the unit to record up to 4 channels at the same time (The icord can do this) provided each recording pair shares a transponder.

In your case assuming the 2 recordings were from different transponders then you would be able to watch (but not time shift) any channel on the same transponder as either recording.

Thanks for that. Wondering if the new firmware will give us up to 4 channels to record. If so major rewrite coming up

Fixing the non recording from the buffer bug should at least offer a 3rd channel record capability (those marked as TSR) on the existing version

Sorry open ofice does not support vba properly and it won't work on a Mac either as it uses active x controls.

Thanks for that Graham. Will have to buy Excel when my trial version expires after three more uses.

You don't need the latest version it should work fine on 97 on. You might find someone who has upgraded and will sell the old cd's.

Thanks for that Graham, but just had a thought. Would it be a lot of work to transfer your data to OpenOffice. That way, lots of people could benefit from your programme, as OpenOffice is free to download. I have the time, but not the ability. You have the ability, but perhaps not the time. You`ll be on my Christmas card list if you can do it. (And a lot of other peoples too I suspect.)

I am not familiar with open offices macro facilities. Certainly without the visual basic backing it would be very hard to replicate the functionality. It would be a lot easier to build a full stand alone visual basic application but that would mean building in a database with updating facilities to replace the simple data table in Excel.

From a bit of research it looks as if the open office basic add on has a similar capability to older basic applications and lacks the graphical user interface of vba.

There is another way and Humax have built it into the HDR.

Press List during the simultanious recording and the available channels will be displayed (the unavailable channels are 'greyed out'). Remember to look at channels 950 and above for extra flexibility as in savvy's post.

Also useful for viewers recording and wanting to watch another channel who are using a single feed.

Do you have one cable or two? I can try a simplified version without the bells and whistles that might work on open office. I love a challenge

I have a twin feed Graham. Thought you might like the challenge, that`s why I suggested it. (As well as only three more uses of Excel trial version.) Thanks.

Useful point, but it`s better to know in advance. eg Last Sunday. I wanted to record Lewis in HD, watch the golf on BBC HD and record The first lady detective. Graham`s system let me set up BBC1 on 954 in advance to record the African programme and left BBC HD free to view.
