DWTS dance off - what is the point?

I have to say I was astounded that Holly stayed in over Denise last week and I really don't see the point of the dance off - OK so they improve their judges marks, but what difference does that make in the grand scheme of things?

It didn't make a blind bit of difference last week so what exactly was the point?

What happens if one of them gets 30, or they both do?
woops.

The judges wanted to appear to have some more control over the silly public and their ridiculous habit of voting, without appearing to totally take over the decision.

Yep, it's pretty stupid. It's obviously had no effect at all. One more thing we can blame John Sergeant for!

It wouldn't matter as the new judges' vote is added in with the original public vote, so unless both couples got an identical number of public votes there will never be a draw.

On DWTS I think the dance off is more about adding to the excitement more than anything else as the public vote is still taken into account.

Thinking about it I can't make up my mind whether I prefer the SCD or the DWTS dance offs.

I prefer the dwts version.

In scd they judges have to make a choice between the 2 celebs, even if they have both danced to same standard, and there's nothing really between them.

With dwts if they think both celebs are the same, they can give them the same mark. The decision then rests on what marks they got previously, plus the public vote.

Much fairer.

I know exactly what you mean about DWTS. In a way I shouldn't try to compare SCD and DWTS as the basic scoring systems are different.

What bothers me about the dance off on SCD is they pick a couple rather than score a performance and that's it - plus there's this thing where Len has the final say when there is a tie.

On DWTS the judges' score the performances and the public score still counts. It is the public vote bit that I struggle with as even though I know how the show works, it still racks me off when a large percentage of the public are voting for someone who can't dance!

I think I'm coming around to the view that I'd like the DWTS scoring system including the dance off on SCD!

That's because there are 4 judges - they need to find a way to introduce a 5th judge 4 the dance off, or each week drop either Craig, Arlene or Bruno (in rotation). But again, I think the US system is better.

I'd prefer 3 or 5 judges tbh.

Think I like the idea of 5 judges with the 5th one being a guest judge and someone different each week and - essentially - someone from the world of ballroom and latin!
