What do you feed your dogs and where do you buy it from?

Can I please ask what do people feed their dogs on and where do you buy it from? From when my pups were first here and until they were 9 months old I fed them on Eukanuba puppy food with a bit of Butcher's tripe mixed in and found a big variation in the prices online and at pet shops like Pets at Home.

I now feed them on IAMS (and a bit of tinned meat) the same as my adult dog and still find that the price varies from place to place and having three hungry dogs is not cheap, so I wondered if anyone else feeds their dogs on dried foods like IAMS and where do you find it the cheapest please?

I buy Arden Grange... I buy straight from them.
http://www.ardengrange.com/Pet-Food/all-dog-foods.asp

I joined the breeders club... (i dont breed). But working dogs are allowed too.
You get the big bags VAT free then.

Both my dogs are fed AG... and they are doing great on it.
And they love it too.

Wafcol salmon and potato complete from pets at home or petplanet and tins of tuna in water from tesco and carrots and other veg from tesco or morrisons.

We get Wafcol retired greyhound food direct from the people who homed her with us.

As it's for working dogs, there's no VAT to pay so it's very economical for us and she wolfs it down.

She gets some rice crispies with natural yoghurt in the morning, a Dentastix at night and the occasional scrap off our plates.

Gusto. It's just over a fiver from tesco and lasts a good six weeks. He'll eat it on it's own (soaked with water) but add things that he liked often too.

Raw meaty bones (free from the local butcher), juiced up veggies (free leftovers from my in-laws fruit & veg wholesale buisiness) so then I can afford Nature Diet for breakfast, plus offal & mince from the butcher.

James Wellbeloved from Pets at Home, mixed with Wagg from Asda to make it go further (half and half) because James is fantastic food but bloody expensive.

James Wellbeloved for my GSD too. Excellent quality food.

I refuse to buy Iams after i saw that undercover investigation into their treatment of animals in their test laboratories. Horrendous.

JWB from my local Pet food store. I prefer to buy from there than from a big chain cos they support the local kennel we got our pup from. It's about the same price anyway.

As I said on another thread, I buy lambs hearts for my Border x Jack Russell Terrier, and cook them with veg and rice. Otherwise he has scraps off the plates or Teso tinned dog meat. When Butchers tinned meat is on offer, he has that. Sometimes I cook chicken legs for him when they are cheap. I take the meat off the bones and mix it with veg.

Our collie was getting Burns but he needed fattening up a bit, so we changed him to Pero Premium which is a working dog food. We order direct from them and it usually arrives the following day, free delivery too.

We mix lamb mince, chicken, tripe or some plain yoghurt with it to try and keep him interested because he's so picky.

We have always fed our CKCS Skinners Lamb and Rice. They don't get any bowel problems or itchy skin.

Beware feeding small dogs with too high a protein food.

Here's an extract from there website;

Skinner’s Lamb & Rice Sensitive is a nutritionally complete hypoallergenic food, specially formulated to be free from wheat, wheat gluten, dairy, beef, egg and soya. It also contains a unique blend of traditional culinary herbs known for their beneficial properties: seaweed, alfalfa, thyme, fennel, basil, parsley, peppermint, garlic, paprika, rosemary, sage, aniseed, fenugreek and yucca.

Sounds almost good enough to eat yourself.

Its on a par with James Wellbeloved and Burns. A lot of vets recommend Butchers again as it is not high in Protein. If your dog suffers from itchy skin its worth trying a lower protein alternative. Older and small lazy dogs do not need a lot of protein.

My dog gets home cooked dogfood 5 days of the week and commercial dogfood for two.

I boil up fresh meat, a small amount of offal (liver or kidney), a little shredded cabbage or spinach, sweet potatoes and add rice or pasta. I add calcium/phosphorus balanced ground bonemeal and salmon oil for Omega 3 and 6. She also gets dried fish treats.Every so often she gets minced whole wild rabbit (bones and guts and all) which she loves.

I give her any good quality wet food and small bite mixture twice a week just in case I'm missing any essential nutrients.

I used to feed her commercial dogfood all the time but became depressed by all the stories about what poor quality it is. It doesn't take much time or efort to do this for her and she's looking healthier than ever

Does anyone on here make their own dog biscuits? My neighbour bought me some nice bone-shaped dog biscuits from when she was away visiting her sister and I thought I'd like to have a go at making some if anyone has a recipe please.

I've never tried making dog biscuits but there are quite a few recipes if you google.

I bake sliced sweet potato for my dog - it ends up really crunchy and she chews away on them quite happily. I just slice the sweet potatoes length-ways and slow bake them in the oven for a couple of hours.

My little dog has home cooked chicken and veg and a little bakers complete, as its the only dried food he will eat, although I am in the process of finding another, as I've heard so many bad things about it, but am having trouble..

He wont eat any of them, infact the James Wellbeloved, that my Border Collie loved, and he wont even look at it, I tried mixing it the Bakers and he spat it out.

I feed my dog James Wellbeloved dry food and have some wet food JWB pouches too. I by it from Pets at Home. Oscar came to us having been fed Eukanuba by his breeder. He didn't seem to like it very much. JWB is cheaper than Eukanuba and I believe the quality of food is better.

JWB here too. Have a look at their website to see what's in it (or, rather, not in it) www.wellbeloved.com/. You can get free samples sent but they do take a long time to come. Or you can buy a trial pack at your supplier.
I've tried various other foods, dry and wet, but Ellie just turns her nose up now. The price does seem to vary but I get it from the local garden centre for £6.56. A 1.5kg bag lasts about 2 weeks (she's fairly small) so I don't think it's too expensive although I've seen it a good deal more expensive elsewhere. I usually buy 2 or 3 bags at a time so I can vary the flavour and don't have to go too often.

A 1.5kg bag wouldn't last long here!!! I use a 15kg bag of dog food every 4 weeks for two dogs and a different make 15kg bag for my other dog about every 8 weeks! Plus a few tins of Butchers' tripe!

My two Arden Grange bags are 15 kg each... One is adult lamb and rice other is senior chicken and rice. I got two dogs both around 25 Kg
They last about 2 1/2 months each.
I share the senior bag with an small local dog.

Arden grange food does get over looked compared to Burns and JWB.
They are all natural dog feed.
I just compared RRP prices... and Arden Grange does come out cheapest.
I suppose because they dont do much advertising they can keep the price down.

I have no experience with buying AG from pet shops... because none stock it near us.
But I would be more expensive of anyway because I dont pay VAT on the breeder bags.

My senior is doing so well on the AG, I am recommending it to everyone. He is a different dog since he is on it. My youngest has been on it since birth. She is nearly 2 now.

I feed my little beast (a Terrier that thinks it's a Rottweiler) on James Well Beloved and Burns.

I've just purchased some Burns Canine Alert really cheap from www.simplyk9.co.uk - Not for my dog though - for my sister-in-law's Staffie.
