I have been given the task by my parents to find a tv which will record live tv (and get rid of all those boxes under the tv).
The problem i have is that my parents set up, includes a Sky box with which they receive freeview (sky free to air programs).
They do not have a traditional aeriel as they live in a valley and the reception is extremely poor, hence the Sky dish.

My question is this will the, JVC 26 inch LCD LT26DE9 WITH 160GB HARD DRIVE tv record from the Sky box in the way a Sky+ works or is will it only record from the 'traditional' freeview service via an aeriel?

Thank you

It cannot record from external sources only it's built-in tuner.

So basically it is not compatiable with Sky, and can only record programmes from it's own input (built-in software/tv guide), so unless the tv has freesat built in, you cannot record without an ariel.

Exactly - it's a digital recorder - so can only record the direct digital signals. To record from an external video source you need an analogue recorder, such as a DVD, or combined DVD/HDD.

oatcake2000, if your parents are only using the Sky box for Freesat then why bother with an analogue recorder at all?

A Freesat PVR will take the place of the current Sky box. With a dual output LNB (i.e. two wires from 'the/a new' lump on the end of the stick on the satellite dish) they would be able to watch one channel whilst recording another. They could pause & rewind live TV. Program the timer from a point & click on screen TV guide etc etc.

Have a look at here ate a Freesat PVR with all these features. LinkFoxSat PVRs

Ditch the Sky box, replace it with this or something similar.

Thanks for the advice but would I need specialist installation for the new LNB or is it in the realms of a diy-er.

Thanks

The new LNB is a one-for-one swap usually. Sometimes the brackets are slightly different depending on how long the original dish has been up, but again it's all pretty straightforward.

If you have ladders and can get access to the dish then a good first step is to go up and take a picture of what's already there. Use a proper digital camera with flash, not a camera-phone. Set the camera to macro mode for close up photography. Your picture will serve you well when looking online for a replacement LNB.

When it comes to making the replacement as long as you don't move the dish then it's a straightforward swap out job. Adding a new cable etc isn't difficult either, though it is a little time consuming.

If this all sounds a bit to much like work then call in a pro. Just make sure they use decent cable and that they waterproof the plug ends at the LNB with some self-amalgamating tape.

If you are in N.Staffs/S.Cheshire and want to throw a bit of work my way then send a pm to me. (Click on my user name and choose the Private Message option from the drop down list.)

Regards

Chris
