I have an old Philips C12 phone. Very basic and I want to get a better phone.

However, with this phone I have a free number, and I would not want to lose this facility. If I am away from home on a course or whatever, I can phone home on a regular basis for free.

To keep this, I am required to top up with at least £15 every 2 months.
It is a BT Cellnet (O2 now, I think) pay as you go.

Question....

Am I right in thinking I can buy another, better phone and use my existing sim card so I will keep the free one phone number?

Any advice gratefully received, I know very little about mobiles.

Yes you can as long as the new phone takes the o2 sim.

or an unlocked phone will do.

How do I know if a phone takes my sim apart from trying it?

Only by triying it. Is he new phone (new) or an 2nd hand one unlocked?

Should not cost more than £5 to unlock a phone.

Ok?

What do you have now?

I have not yet bought a new phone, as I was unsure if my sim would work in any other phone.

I currently have an old Philips C12, a pretty dire phone, but I don't want to lose the free number facility.

My wife has an even better deal, same phone, unlike where I must top up with at least £15 every 2 months, she has a free number and only needs to top up the phone at least once a year.

Ok. Thats fine.

all you need a "Sim free" phone. Open to all networks.

Nokia 3410 for £40 for example.

It is upto you what type of phone you want and can use.

Does that help you any further?

Yes it does thank you.

I don't use my mobile much, I only really want to change it as I cannot get a hands free kit that will work with my existing phone that gives decent results.

I have tried a few universal kits and none work very well. It's a struggle to hear the caller from the loud speaker.

I have one of those and the quality is awful as it picks up too much interference from the engine. Tried it in friends cars and the result was the same.

I meant where can I find a sim free Nokia 3410 for around £40?

Your SIM card will not work in a new phone - it is specially adapted, and only works in a Phillips C12, Genie or a Diga (and I think there was a Motorola it worked in too).

The very first Cellnet SIMs (such as the one you have) store the balance on the sim card itself, and is non-standard. If you want to retain the free number, you'll have to keep this phone and buy a new SIM for a new phone, if you want to upgrade.

Just to test it you can find a mate how has a o2 phone and see if it works. If it does then get anew phone or 2nd hand.

Get hold of an o2 SIM from eBay, or buy a new phone and o2 sim together, then ring o2 customer services and ask to have your credit and number transferred. I have heard of other people doing this in the past although I suppose it will depend which CS advisor you get.

I think I might email them first and ask if I can do that.

Your 'free number' sounds cool...

Is every single call and message free?

Only one number is free.

You have to confirm which number you want to be free when topping up.

You may be better phoning TBH because I've heard their support email is somethng of a black hole.

Mention you have one of these old SIMs, they might be more sympathetic.

There are a lot of 300 free text/ free wap SIMs on eBay right now, just in case you lose the free number deal when you transfer.
