A new BT installation with costs £124.99 (or it did when I enquired recently). You may be able to get a special offer deal £30 installation for cable customers, but I don't know if this is still available.
The installation would be free if there is a stopped line at your property, but judging by your comments I doubt there will be one after several years with no BT service. Something to bear in mind is that you are unlikely that get the 10Mbps speed of Virgin's entry level broadband L tier through a BT phone line. This is of less importance if you only use the internet for browsing/emailing etc. Are you spending a lot on phone calls? If you phone Virgin's cancellations department and explain your plans they may offer you a loyalty discount to stay with them. |

For the past several years we paid BT £16 per month for line rental and calls, plus £18 to VM for 2Mbps broadband (£34pm). We recently upgraded to 10Mbps L broadband and switched over to a cable phone and are now paying £26pm to VM + call charges (with free caller display). Although VM call charges are higher on average than BT's my monthly bill should be lower than before.
A lot of businesses are now using 0844 numbers which are still chargeable on a BT line, so the free 0845 and 0870 numbers offer isn't quite as good as it seems. It isn't entirely free either: BT line rental has increased as of April, probably to pay for this deal. I wouldn't consider BT broadband myself because of the usage caps: a measly 10GB per month on the basic package. VM has nasty speed restrictions but at least they don't limit the amount you can download. |
