I don't think it should annoy you, after all words aren't pronounced the same in every instance between different languages.

No-it is spelt Bruschetta. sch is pronounced SK. It's an Italian word for an Italian product.

It's just the same as pronouncing Chianti with a K sound rather than s SH sound at the start, and it also applies to some English words, like "cholesterol".

Unlike Chardonnay which is French and therefore adheres to the French pronunciation rules.

Or indeed Pinocchio, whom as far as I know has never been called Pinoshio.
And chianti has been the long established pronunciation of that word...because that is how it is pronounced!

Also, as with Cholestoral etc, its because the letters are at the start of the sentence. There aren't too many words with CH in the middle pronounced as K

Theres no S, so it would be Chio not shio. Chio's kind of more like Kio than Shio anyway.

Sch is the GERMAN way of pronouncing SH...not the Italian. Bruschetta is Italian.

Pinocchio would be pronounced with a K because the c before the ch cancels out the SH(CH) pronouncation.

I'm using Italian. Because all the examples I've given-including Bruschetta -are Italian.

I've no idea what your Brushetta is, and some would-be apprentices seem to think that food is only for certain people which pisses me off big time too. The way some make the most basic foods sound too good for the less well heeled is a load of bullshine.

I'm saying the correct pronunciation by English language rules for Pinnocchio would be with a K because the c before the ch makes the commonsense pronunciation a K.

I've always pronounced it with a hard 'k' sound but haven't heard anyone else doing so. I reckon you're extremely brave- but dead right- to start this thread.

My mother is foreign and many people I work with are foreign - they all pronounce English words every which way makes sense to them in their own languages. It's cute :P Why get annoyed at bad pronounciation of a foreign language? Especially since most people pronounce Bruschetta that way over here so how do people know they are wrong?

Give in gracefully...I promise you in Italian it is pronounced with a k sound (broosketta).....c followed by o or a is a hard 'k' (Carlo) sound but c followed by e or i is a soft 'ch' sound (ciao!!!). So the only reason the h is there is to harden the c sound....it's why the Italians spell kilometre with a 'ch' at the start as they don't have a k in their alphabet. Just because we usually mispronounce it in Britain doesn't change that fact.

All my people were foreign too, and had their own way of speaking, like you said of yours, and one gets used to that, but, if you went into a shop and asked for such and such, the shop assistant wouldn't tell them they pronounced it the wrong way, and I think that's the real problem. But if you're British speaking English then who thinks of how foods are pronounced.

I'm not arguing that point any more, I don't have a clue what the correct pronunciation of words is in Italy.
